MEO Rip Curl Pro Portugal ran Round 2 and 3 at Peniche on October 22, 2017 in five-to-six foot waves.
On October 21, the event finished until Heat 4 of Round 2. Next day, it resumed from Heat5.
Hurley Pro winner Filipe Toledo (BRA) was defeated by Leonardo Fioravanti (ITA) in Heat 4. He left the event early. Also, Owen Wright (AUS) was took down by Vasco Ribeiro (PRT), at the point, Filipe Toledo and Owen Wright lost opportunity of world title.
In Round 3, Julian Wilson (AUS) and John John Florence (HAW) won in Heat 2 and 6, each. But Matt Wilkinson (AUS), Jordy Smith (ZAF) and Adriano de Souza (BRA) were defeated in Heat 1, Heat 7 and Heat 10. This result marks three competitors was leaving world title race.
Finally, Gabriel Medina (BRA), John John Florence (HAW) and Julian Wilson (AUS) have opportunity of world title remaining.
But if Florence finishes 3rd or below, the World title decision will go to Hawaii.

"It was definitely a scary heat, there were a lot of good waves coming through and he's a really good surfer. I just wanted to be on the same peak as him when I was in priority and kind of play it safe. I was so excited, the wind was blowing into the lefts and I was going so fast on that first wave I just had to hit it. I thought for a second I had it but I landed way too much into the flats."
