Zedd, Maren Morris and Grey Reveal Behind The Scenes of “The Middle” on The New York Times
- Russian-German producer Zedd, American electronic music duo Grey and American country music singer Maren Morris released “The Middle” on January 23, 2018. The song is currently sitting at number 6 on the US Billboard Hot 100.
The New York Times revealed the behind-the-scenes of the song in The New York Times' new series "Diary of a Song".
“The Middle” was written by songwriter Sarah Aarons, who contributed Zedd and Alessia Cara's song "Stay".
She worked with production team The Monsters and the Strangerz. They sent the demo to Grey and Zedd, who edited the song and looked for a vocalist for the song.
Zedd said, "I felt, if done right, this could be a huge smash. So we start working on it together. Everybody started loving it. Let's just find the vocalist, which was something that ended up taking, as you know, quite a long time."
14 artists sent the demo to Zedd, but he was not satisfied. "There were months where we almost gave up because nobody could sing it properly," he said.
Finally, he found Maren Morris. "I didn't really know about all the drama finding a vocalist. The rhythm is so interesting -- lookin' at you I can't lie -- it's like walking up stairs," she said.
