MotoGP Austria: Ducati's Andrea Iannone beats Valentino Rossi to pole position
The Round 10 on MotoGP 2016, Austria GP qualifying session, Andrea Iannone (Ducati Team) claimed his second career MotoGP pole position, as Valentino Rossi (Movistar Yamaha) split the factory Ducatis in qualifying for the Austrian Grand Prix.
Iannone's team-mate Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team) was third postion on front row.
Jorge Lorenzo (Movistar Yamaha) finished the fourth. World championship leader Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda), riding injured after dislocating his shoulder this morning, will start from fifth. Maverick Vinales (Team Suzuki Ecstar ) was sixth on the grid.
Andrea Iannone said,
“The injury is a bit better today and I think the Clinica Mobile has worked very well for me. The recovery is not fast but the pain has improved a lot since yesterday. Over 28 laps I think it will be difficult…but I don´t want to focus on the injury because it’s a negative point. We have a lot of positive points – we’re on pole position - and this is a good moment for us.”
Valentino Rossi said,
“I tried to push where my bike is very good – in the last sector and in T3. We’ve worked a lot today from this morning, when it was a difficult practice and we’ve improved a lot. In FP4 I was third behind the Ducatis but then we were able to make another small step before qualifying. To split the Ducatis was a great target – but I did a great lap and I’m very happy.”
Andrea Dovizioso said,
“I’m not surprised by the result because I know that Iannone is very strong in qualifying. We tried to get pole but couldn’t. I didn’t do a perfect lap - I did a good lap time but not perfect. In any case, the front row is important for the race and I’m so happy about the weekend until now, because our pace for the race is really good. So we’ll see tomorrow who worked in the best way for the whole 28 laps…”
