  • boygenius Performs “Not Strong Enough” & “Satanist” on Saturday Night Live

  • American indie rock band boygenius, consisting of Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus, appeared on Saturday Night Live to perform “Not Strong Enough” and “Satanist” on November 11, 2023.

This marks their musical guest debut on SNL. But the member Phoebe Bridgers appeared on the sketch show in 2021 and destroyed her guitar on stage after her performance.
Both songs are featured on their debut album “The Record”, which was released back in March.
“Not Strong Enough” and “Satanist” were written and produced by Boygenius, with production by Catherine Marks.
The band was nominated for a six awards at the 2024 Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year, and Best Engineered Album with “The Record”, as well as Record of the Year, Best Rock Song, and Best Rock Performance with “Not Strong Enough”.

Before Saturday Night Live, the band performed “Not Strong Enough” on BBC Radio 6 Music Live Session.
boygenius said of “Not Strong Enough”, “As it was shaping up, I think that the song was looking like it was just going to only be about having a little bit of mental illness. Just being like, I don't know, like, I'm frustrated that my brain works how it does. So, I was like, “Okay, yeah, what's gonna be more expected of us than us writing about hating our own brains?” And then, I think it got more special to me when the element, like, Phoebe has expressed it as self-hatred plus having a God complex – like, sometimes, you feel like you're the best thing ever –, and both of these states can be happening at the same time.”
