Julia Michaels Releases New EP “Second Self”
American singer-songwriter Julia Michaels released a new EP “Second Self” on May 23, 2025 via GFY Records.
The EP is her first project in four years since the 2021 debut album “Not in Chronological Order”.
Also, it is the first release as an independent artist and under her own label GFY Records.
The EP comprises 6 tracks, including a collaboration with American singer-songwriter Maren Morris.
Produced by Emmit Fenn, John Ryan, Jon Bellion, Mattman & Robin, The Monsters & Strangerz, Ojivolta, Pete Nappi and Tenroc. Cover Art by Blythe Thomas.
Julia Michaels said of the EP, “I've spent so much of my life helping other people tell their stories. This time, it's just me. These songs are mine. This project is mine. And that's the most liberating feeling I've ever had.”- Julia Michaels told Rolling Stone about the EP, “These songs are raw, unfiltered, and some are way too specific. Some are fun and lighthearted and some are a bit more in your face. I've loved these songs for months, years and [they] have held such a special place in my heart. I'm excited to be able to share them with my fans. It's [songs] they can dance to or scream at an ex to.”

Julia Michaels explained about some tracks for the EP.
“Heaven II”
“This song means so much to me because it's my first song that I'm releasing as an independent artist. It's taken so much to get to this point. A big thank you to everyone that stuck by me through all of this and believed in me enough for me to want to believe in myself enough to keep making songs that I love. So this is HEAVEN II. Me on my own terms. It's about love. Sex. Infatuation. Longing. Desire. Freedom. And my hot ass boyfriend.
This song is a celebration of freedom. Freedom of one's self expression, freedom of love and the freedom to be yourself on your own terms. I hope Heaven II can empower you to express yourself like it has for me. Thank you to John Bellion, Pete Nappi, TenRock for creating this with me. I can't tell you how much that week meant to me.”
“Scissors” with Maren Morris
“We wrote together for the first time in 2020. We did a song called 'Circles Around This Town' together that got nominated, actually for Best Country Song at the Grammys, and from then, we've worked together since. And we wrote together last year for her album, and did a song called 'Cut!'. And she had texted me and was like, 'Would you want to do this song with me?' And I was like, 'Duh'. And I was like, 'Speaking of 'Cut!', I actually have a song called 'Scissors'. Lol. Okay, Would you want to do that one with me?', and she heard it and she was like 'Oh my gosh, yes.' And we got to make the fun as funniest music video together, and just had such a blast.
I definitely think songwriting comes down to just a feeling. If it feels good to you then it must be good. And I think the best part making music is making it obviously personal to you, but it bing able to relate to a lot of people and who doesn't want to cut people out to their lives from time to time.”
