MotoGP Italian GP: Francesco Bagnaia Takes Pole Position and Wins Sprint Race at Mugello
The Round 6 of MotoGP 2023, Gran Premio d'Italia Oakley took place at the Autodromo Internazionale del Mugello in Scarperia e San Piero on June 10, 2023.
This time, Joan Mir (Repsol Honda) withdrew qualifying and the race due to a hand injury on Friday afternoon.
Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo) took a home pole position to set a time of 1m44.855s with just under three minutes left in Q2.
Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda) had to settle for second with a time of 1m44.933s. Alex Marquez (Gresini Ducati) advanced to Q2 from Q1 and was 3rd with setting a time of 1m45.007s. But he will start the race on the second row. Because, he has been given a three-place grid penalty due to the sanction for “irresponsible riding causing danger to other competitors” at the previous race in Le Mans.
Luca Marini (Mooney VR46 Ducati) has his final lap reinstated after it was initially removed for exceeding track limits and moved up to 4th, which means a front row on Sunday.
Jack Miller (Red Bull KTM) advanced to Q2 from Q1 and was in 5th. Jorge Martin (Pramac Ducati) was 6th.
Followed by, Marco Bezzecchi (Mooney VR46 Ducati) and Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia Racing) were 7th and 8th, respectively.
Alex Rins (LCR Honda) finished 10th, but suffered broken leg in Sprint race accident. He will withdraw the race on Sunday.
In the Sprint Race, Francesco Bagnaia took his third sprint race victory. Marco Bezzecchi finished 2nd behind Francesco Bagnaia by 0.369s. Jorge Martin was 3rd. Ducati complete the top three.
Pole sitter Francesco Bagnaia briefly lost lead when the rain fell at the end of lap two. But at the start of lap four he charged back into the lead when the rain stopped.
Francesco Bagnaia maintained his advantage over the closing laps and setted the fastest lap of the race. Finally he took the win.
The 2nd place starting, Marc Marquez moved down and finished 7th. The front row starting Alex Marquez was clattered by Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM) and crashed out. Brad Binder was given a long lap penalty and finished 11th.
Johann Zarco (Pramac Ducati) was 4th. Luca Marini took 5th with fighting through an injury ahead of Jack Miller (Red Bull KTM) was 6th.
Enea Bastianini (Ducati Lenovo), making his comeback after a long injury-induced absence, was 9th.
Francesco Bagnaia said, “I'm sure when I will rewatch the race I will see where I started the panic for the riders behind as when I exited from Arrabbiata 2, I was feeling that it was wet and everyone was passing me. Then I saw someone on the outside, so maybe I was a bit too slow. But then I just decided to go with Jorge because arriving in sector four everything was dry, sector one and two as well, but the last part of sector two and the first part of sector three was wet. So it was quite scary.”
