Nashville-based alt-pop singer-songwriter Caroline Romano released her second single of 2021 called “PDA of the Mainstream” with accompanying music video on July 18, 2021.
Caroline Romano explained of the song, “The poisonous and despicable authority of the mainstream. i find it to be the worst form of PDA. When I'm angry, I laugh. Then, I write about it. That's what happened here. Maybe anger isn't the right word to describe my tumultuous outlook on applications and the digital age, and trying to make music through it all. It's more that I feel like I'm 10 years old again, looking at something I fear I'm never going to be a part of. In the most honest of confessions, I don't even want to be a part of it. But, and this is the despicable part about it, I have to want it. Because I'm told everyday that in order to make it, I have to be a part of this world that I look at with the deepest sense of dread and trepidation. I'm not an internet star. And there, in that statement is why I wrote this song.”- She continued, “I had to remind myself that I don't want to be an internet star. 10 year old me didn't want to be an internet star either. She wanted to be a rockstar. She just wanted to say things, and she wanted people to listen. So I wrote exactly how I see this medium, in its misdirections and shiny vices, and the wall we all want our picture to hang on. And I guess I found the conclusion of it all to be that I was not about to obey the PDA of the Mainstream.”
The video was directed by Justin Nolan Key, who filmed at Backlot Studios in Nashville. She said of the video, “The music video for 'PDA of the Mainstream' was my chance to yell directly at the internet,” Caroline says. “I wanted to visually create my own little version of the internet and how I see it, and I think I did that. There's kittens and confetti and destruction, along with a whole lot of screaming. If that's not representative of applications and the digital age, I don't know what is. If I can't beat it, I figured I might as well smash it with a hammer.” - source : SoundCloud
