Los Angeles-based Canadian singer-songwriter and actress Kayla DiVenere released a brand new single called “Small Talk”, influenced by '80s romantic movies, on March 1, 2024 via Sound Factory Records.
The song is the follow-up to her recent hit singles like “Date Myself” and “Jumping the Gun”.
Kayla DiVenere created the song with producer Jordan Witzigreuter and songwriters Maia Kelly and Zach DeGaetano.
Lyrics capture the highs and lows of young adulthood, and tell the story of a secret crush she has on her brother's best friend.
“I created 'Small Talk' in my longing to have more than a fleeting 5 minute conversation with my crush every time he would come over,” Kayla DiVenere said of the song. “My imagination ran wild and I found myself aching for something like a John Hughes romance movie about a secret love, complete with a boombox outside my window and a mixtape of his favorite songs. After rewatching every romance movie I could find, I decided that instead of torturing myself, I should write this song in an attempt to pour my heart out and make sense of my desire for something more than small talk.”- She added, “I've had a crush on my brother's best friend since I was like 14. He comes over all the time and I always have these short conversations with him. I was getting so fed up and I was like 'God I want to know him deeper than this. I know that we could have a meaningful conversation. I want more than this small talk that we're having.'”
