  • half•alive Releases New Song “Subliminal”

  • Long Beach-based alt-pop trio half·alive, consisting of Josh Taylor (vocals/guitar), Brett Kramer (drums) and J. Tyler Johnson (bass), released a new song “Subliminal” along with a music video on September 13, 2023.

The song is the third single, following “Nobody” featuring Dodie and “Beige” since the 2022 album “Conditions of a Punk”.
The track was written by Josh Taylor, Brett Kramer, J Tyler Johnson, Skylar Stonestreet, and Solomonophonic. Produced by half•alive.
The accompanying music video was directed by Isaac Ravishankara.
half•alive said of the song, “Subliminal” is about the walls people can often put up when dealing with the vulnerability (& pain) required to love someone & be loved in return. Following the release of COAP, we set out to write something upbeat & energized & felt confident in producing it ourselves. We expressed the idea visually through a simple goodbye hug... in the moment of embrace, a whole lifetimes feelings & memories are experienced, one's you knew were there & others that are more- subliminal. the intention for the art was to bring that moment of embrace (& all of the unconscious feelings within it) to a dream-like extreme, using several hyper-surreal generated images tediously composited together... the video aims to brings the same moment to life through dance, emotion, performance, & camera magic (directed by Isaac Ravishankara, choreographed by Jillian Meyers).”
  • Director Isaac Ravishankara said of the video, “I've long been fascinated by the subconscious and the fundamental ways our minds and bodies are mostly working outside of our control. When Josh Taylor from half•alive approached me about collaborating on this project, we wanted to answer the question – what would it feel like to choreograph a duet between two people, where many other people represent the subliminal mind?”
He continued, “Josh dedicated so much of himself in the weeks of development and rehearsal to be able to execute such a tightly choreographed piece while singing the entire time. I couldn't be more thrilled about how the project turned out.”
