  • World Surf League: Oi Rio Pro, Adriano De Souza Wins in Hometown, Brazil

  • The Fourth Stop on WSL Championship, Oi Rio Men’s Pro the Quarterfinals, Semifinals and Final ran at Praia de Itaúna in six-to-eight foot waves in Saquarema.


    2015's World Champion Adriano de Souza (BRA) claimed the victory in his hometown, Brazil. The result marks his first victory of this season and moving up him to second place on the Jeep Leaderboard. Runner-up was Adrian Buchan (AUS), who defeated Matt Wilkinson (AUS) in Semifinals and Jordy Smith (ZAF) in Quarterfinals.
    The final witnessed a close battle, both surfers of Adriano de Souza and Adrian Buchan earned so close points 17.63 and 17.23 each other. Adrian Buchan tried reversal win in the last few minutes of finish, but he couldn't catch wave. Finally, Adriano de Souza took his seventh victory on the elite Championship Tour.
    The wildcard Yago Dora (BRA) beaten 2014's World Champion Gabriel Medina (BRA) and 3-time World Champion Mick Fanning (AUS), also he defeated current World Champion John John Florence (HAW). But he was taken down by Adriano de Souza in Semifinals.

    Winner Adriano de Souza said after the final;
    “It has been a while since I have stepped onto the podium. But, I have been working for so long to be here. I am so grateful for all the support, especially all the fans here in Brazil. You can count on me because I am back in the game."

    Runner-up Adrian Buchan (AUS) said;
    "I’ve really enjoyed myself here in Saquarema. I think the surfing we’ve seen in the last ten days has been incredible and has shown the world that Brazil has great waves and incredible surfers. Brazilians do beach culture better than everyone else. I am looking forward to coming back next year. It was really special to have a Final with Adriano [de Souza]. He is an amazing role model for all the young Brazilian surfers and I just want to say a huge congratulations to him."

    Third place Yago Dora said;
    "I want to get on tour next year. I am learning a lot at this event and it is helping my confidence. I feel like I am more ready with every heat. Both Gabriel Medina and Mick Fanning are my idols and to beat them is amazing."
