British-Nigerian singer-songwriter Essence Martins released her debut EP “Deer In The Headlights” on February 23, 2024.
The EP comprises a 6-track, written by Essence Martins and produced by Jules Konieczny.
Essence Martins shared on social media, “I wanna say a massive thank you to everyone who's been a part of this project, helped it come alive and put into the world! it's been a 3yr journey and I've learned and grown so much in that time!”
Essence Martins told The New Age Magazine, “With the title of the EP, it definitely feels like entering a new world how scary that is and also how liberating that feels and like just that feeling of having no clue what you're doing. I feel like a 'Deer In The Headlights' like so often just throughout my entire journey the last three years. And so it's scary but at the same time it's very exciting.”- She continued, “During the process of writing it I didn't really know what I was making, I was just writing the songs that fell out of me and it was during the process of like being in university so a couple of the songs on the EP were actually written for briefs for my songwriting course.”
She added, “I feel like it also makes sense with the whole story of the EP just it because there's so many different topics like spirituality of being a bit philosophical, Just like photonic love, like heartbreak unrequited love situation ships and also just like feeling insecure and yourself.” - Essence Martins explained about some tracks for the EP.
“Pending Status”
“Pending Status is a song about being involved with someone who isn't fully committed. The flame you once had for them starts to burn out and eventually, you have to move on. We shouldn't wait around forever for someone who can't make their mind up. It's always better to know where you stand, even if you don't get the answer you're looking for. Knowing is better than not knowing...”
“Wandering Souls”
“'Wandering Souls; is about curiosity. It is a small window into my mind. I often wonder what happens to us when we complete our journey on earth. To me, wandering souls feels like a child who has an endless curiosity about the ways of the world. It has all these questions that no one can really answer.”
“Like a Fool”
“It's about dealing with feelings of fear, a lack of independence while still hung up on the way things were. Change has been a huge thing for me. I always planned on being a tennis player. When I hung my racquet up, I felt like my identity went with it. I often felt like a 'Deer in the Headlights', a little lost and unsure of what I was doing. I had to build who I was from the bottom up again and even though it was scary it was really liberating.”
“Brussel Sprouts”
“My twin sister and I understand each other so well that we know exactly what to do when one of us is having a hard time. I also have two older sisters who encourage and influence me to be the best person I can be. For me 'Brussel Sprouts' symbolises a rite of passage. A lot of us grew up hating Brussel sprouts as kids because of their bitter taste, but we were all told to eat them because they're good for us. Everyone has to overcome obstacles to get to the light at the end of a tunnel and the Brussel Sprouts are just the little bumps in life that we all must encounter.”
“Hate No More”
“'Hate No More, that song is so long so I was like can't be a single I didn't think people listen to it but I like I it was one of those where I showed it to Jules my producer and he was like you have to put this one on the EP. It's good to have a song about mental Health on the EP and like he just liked the vibes and I was like okay then I confident in it as well now.” - source : Apple Music
