Toronto-based singer-songwriter Mike Evin returned with a new song “I Almost Called You Babe” on February 14, 2024.
The song is his first music in five years since the 2019 album “Evin On Earth”.
The track was written by Mike Evin and produced by Chris Stringer.
The accompanying music video was directed by Merging Forest Films.
Mike Evin said of the song, “Less than a month before I was scheduled to go into the studio to record a new batch of songs, I went through a big intense breakup. I wasn't sure I would even be able to go through with the project, but I decided it would be a healthy distraction. Obviously there was a lot to process from the breakup, and I gave myself time to write as a form of therapy. 'I Almost Called You Babe' came out in a very raw writing session two weeks before going into the studio.”- He continued, “I had zero expectation of writing a song that anybody else would hear. It was just for me. But later on I realised it was actually a good song, so here it is. It's a snapshot of how I was feeling in the murky days after the breakup, with the waves of denial, sadness and acceptance all mixed together.”
He added, “I've got to say - I don't know if I'll ever be able to perform this song live. It's just so heavy and potent. Will I be able to enter that vibe and come out of it every night in front of an audience? Who knows — maybe I'll be up to it. The song still makes me sad, but I also feel lucky that as a songwriter I have the opportunity to work through my feelings with melody and lyrics.” -
