Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Rani Adi Barlas, aka RANI ADI released a debut song “Starkissed” on June 24, 2022.
The song will appeare on her debut EP, chis is expected to be released this fall.
The track was written and produced by Rani Adi Barlas and Cole Mitchell.
Rani Adi Barlas said of the song, “I co-wrote and co-produced 'Starkissed' with my best friend and collaborator, Cole Mitchell. I had just gotten out of a complicated relationship with a girl who was closeted, and I wanted the song to capture that feeling of being in a euphoric but toxic relationship. We worked through the night and created Starkissed, which perfectly encapsulated my experiences of love, lust, heartbreak, and yearning.”
She continued, “When we wrote 'Starkissed', I was really going through it. I wanted the song to reflect my experiences in a closeted queer relationship–forbidden to be out together and yearning for the day I could share our love with the world. With that in mind, I wrote: 'Secret love, Not enough, Dreaming of The day that I can take you in the light.' Writing 'Starkissed' gave my past self a voice to speak about the things I wanted my closeted relationship to be that I never had the space to vocalize”.- The music video will be premiered on July 8, 2022.
She said of the video, “The music video for 'Starkissed' is unapologetically queer in a way that I could never be with my ex-girlfriend. I wanted to capture the relationship in a different light, showing the paradise-like aspects of the relationship while simultaneously capturing its toxicity. I aimed to capture the stages of falling in love and discovering myself while being in an extremely destructive relationship.I tried to convey the depth and complexity of the song's origin story throught the music video. The video has a fantastical dream-like quality, intended to leave the audience unsure if it was the real experience or only imagined. That's how it felt for me in the relationship, because everything had to be kept a secret.”
She added, “The music video for Starkissed is intended to make the viewer feel like they are living through the memories of a relationship, experiencing all of the highs and lows in an almost paralyzing trip down memory lane.” - source : Apple Music
