Donate to support families affected by the crisis in Ukraine ➔ World Surf League: Vans US Open of Surfing, Sage Erickson Takes Her First Victory in Huntington Beach
Vans US Open of Surfing Final Day, Women’s Semifinals and Final took place at Huntington Beach in three-to-four foot waves on August 6.
Hometown hero Sage Erickson (USA) claimed her career-first Championship Tour victory and jumped to No. 6 on the Jeep Leaderboard.
In the Final, defending champion of this event Tatiana Weston-Webb (HAW), who took down Coco Ho (HAW) in Semifinals, caught many waves from starting Heat and took 10 rides. But her waves were middle sized, she earned 5.03 and 4.77 points with total of 9.80. Meanwhile, Sage Erickson defeated Courtney Conlogue (USA) with highest score 7.50 in Semifinals and advanced to her first CT Final. In Final Heat, she were waiting for big waves and showcased speedy riding with 5.17 and 6.67 points. Finaly, she took a long-awaited victory in Huntington Beach.
Winner Sage Erickson said;
"Holy crap, I don't even know what's going on right now. I had the best wave to start and I just blew it so hard and just told myself 'It's okay, don't worry.' Then I thought, 'Wait, it's kind of lully, maybe I should've worried about that.' I...could hear [my coach] Tom [Whitaker] in the back of my head "Don't you dare stand up unless it's a good wave, especially at this point" I got that last wave and I don't know exactly what I got, but this feels like a dream.
I'm in complete disbelief and can't thank everyone enough, Tom has just believed in me so much the last two years. I feel like I've been working really hard for a moment like this and something felt really special about this event, really comfortable and just aiming high. I can't believe I'm here. I'm not World Champ, it's just the US Open, but it still feels like that so I'm going to celebrate it like I am."
Runner-up Tatiana Weston-Webb said;
“Two Finals in a row, wow, I can’t thank God enough for putting me in this position and of course my support crew. Everyone here was second-to-none. My surfboards have been amazing under my feet and my sponsors have just been incredible, and I love them all so much.”
