Justin Timberlake Announces New Album “Everything I Thought It Was”, Shares New Song “Selfish”
American singer-songwriter Justin Timberlake has announced that his sixth studio album “Everything I Thought It Was” will be released on March 15, 2024 via RCA Records.
The album is his first body of work in six years since the 2018 album “Man of the Woods” and comprises a 18-track.
“I think there are moments that are incredibly honest, but also, there's a lot of fucking fun on this album,” Justin Timberlake told Zane Lowe of Apple Music 1 about the album. “I think that's where I came up with the album title, with everything I thought it was. I was playing it for people around me. They're like, 'Oh, this sounds like everything we know you for.' And then another friend of mine was like, 'Oh, this sounds like everything I thought I wanted from you.' It was like that sort of phrase, in one way or another, was in the air. And I thought to myself about how some of the songs are more introspective and some of them are more what I think people know me for.”
- From the album, he released the first single called “Selfish” on January 25, 2024.
The track was written by Amy Allen, Henry Walter, Justin Timberlake, Louis Bell, and Theron Makiel Thomas.
Produced by Justin Timberlake, Louis Bell, and Cirkut. The accompanying music video was directed by Bradley Calder.
Justin Timberlake told Zane Lowe about the song, “We were talking about the song itself and just breaking down the idea that you just don't hear that from men often, that they would express an emotion that makes them vulnerable. And then, growing up the way I grew up, you're taught not to do that. But I don't know, it just felt like a really honest song.”
He continued, “The lyrics just started to come out honestly. And when I listened to the whole album, I felt like it's probably, of all the songs on the album, production-wise, probably the most straightforward, and I don't want to say simple because it's complex within its simplicity to me.”
- He will appear on Saturday Night Live to perform the song on January 27, 2024.
He said, “I flirted with the idea of, should I host or ask to host? And then I just thought, 'No, this album is really special to me in a different, different way.' And, yeah, you read that perfectly, but I also cannot imagine that I won't get pulled into a sketch or two. It's only natural. And I'm here for it. That's always fun. SNL, for me, in any capacity. I've hosted five, but I don't even know how many times I've been on the show.”
