Jorja Smith Releases New Album “falling or flying”
British singer-songwriter Jorja Smith released her sophomore album “falling or flying” on September 29, 2023
It is her first body of work in five years since the 2018 debut album “Lost & Found”.
The album comprises 16-track, featuring guest appearances from J Hus and Lila Iké.
Jorja Smith worked with producer DAMEDAME* on the album. Also, other producers, including Blue May, Jodi Milliner, New Machine, and P2J, joined in the album.
This time, she decided that London was not suitable for her life and music production, and she returned to her home, the Midlands.
“I feel like making the album brought me back home,” Jorja Smith said in a statement. “Where you're from is where you get your powers, and that's why I'm so grateful I could make this with DAMEDAME* - they still have their roots in the ground from back home. And we had so much fun making this.”
She added, “I like this world that I've just come into. And I'm still figuring things out. Always figuring things out. This is the first time I'm putting stuff out there that I can connect with right now.”
Jorja Smith explained about some tracks for the album.
“The song is about putting yourself out there, in front of a world that has many opinions, as it only ever used to be me really being my own critic. This is the first time I'm putting stuff out there that I can connect with right now.
I think I was writing this to my friends in 2021. They were playing you hear the beat right now that you hear that was playing when I come back and I was like, 'I need to shower but I want to sing'. So then started singing and then I was singing like I've changed. I wrote with my friends DAMEDAME. We were just talking about how so much has changed for me. Now the pressure of like putting yourself out there in front of loads of people say that sort of songs about.”
“The song is pretty self explanatory, I had a lil concoction – rum, ting and a magnum. When we started creating this song I was just imagining hearing this walking into a party and seeing someone I'd had my eye on. It's fun!”
“Falling or flying”
“The idea for the video came to mind 'cause i always wanted to shoot a video in space. 'Falling Or flying' just made me think of that. I wanted to go up into space with someone I love and cherish, but they didn't want to come with me.”
“GO GO GO”
“GO GO GO' is kind of a f you song. Why do people have to kiss and tell, kind of vibe. I'm in my little alternative bag, but I've always kind of been in it. People might be like, 'I didn't expect this', but I'm like: 'well, I would!'
When I was making music with DAMEDAME who produced this track, we'd written a song before we got on a roll and then we just couldn't make anything. And we was talking about like, listen to Two Door Cinema Club. Then they were like 'Oh play, J this song,' so they'd already written it, and we changed out some of the lyrics and I was like this slapped and then vocaled it and it's kind of just like, over you kind of you kind of something.”
“Greatest Gift” featuring Lila Iké
“I will never forget This session which happened to be on my birthday this year 🙏🏽✨ truly the greatest gift. Big up Gad, uncle yellow and uncle zebbie for bringing vibes to the session goooo streammm!!!”
“Broken is the man”
“This one was actually more of like a team decision because I was thinking I have portfolios for no fly now with the album, not because it's called the same layer as my album but because it's called the same name as my album. But then like, so my team like 'Broken is the man' and we're like, this one would do really were like going out with the album. And I was like, the songs are gonna come out at some point or albums coming out. So they did a little vote like around the office to see like, the people like, oh, this should go with the album. And it was 'Broken is the man' and this song will resonate with a lot of people. There's no like formula behind. I'm gonna put this out on the side just because it feels right.”
