Donate to support families affected by the crisis in Ukraine ➔ World Surf League: Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast, Round 2 - Round 5, John John Florence advances to Quarterfinals
Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast ran Round 2, Round 3, Round 4 and Round 5 on day 4 at Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia on March 17-18. Waves were in three-to-five foot (1 - 1.5 metre).
On elimination Round 2, current World Champion Tyler Wright's brother Mikey Wright (AUS) and Kelly Slater (USA) recovered to Round 3. But Filipe Toledo (BRA) and Pipe Master's runner-up Kanoa Igarashi (USA) were defeated and left this event.
On Round 3, the wildcard Owen Wright (AUS) defeated 3-time World Champion Mick Fanning (AUS). But Owen's brother Mikey Wright (AUS) was defeated by current World Champion John John Florence (HAW). Especially, John John Florence narrowly won with 7.90 in 2 minutes 30 seconds left.
Also, on the first day of the event, Gabriel Medina had been checked by the medical center after the injury. But he returned to the contest on Heat 12, advanced to Round 4 with 9.80 and 9.20, a total of 19.00.
Finally, defending Champion of the event Matt Wilkinson (AUS), John John Florence (HAW), Connor O’Leary (AUS) and Gabriel Medina (BRA) advanced to directly Quarterfinals.
After elimination Round 5, Joel Parkinson (AUS), Italo Ferreira (BRA), Owen Wright (AUS) and Kelly Slater (USA) moved on to Quarterfinals.
After Round 3, John John Florence said;
"Mikey Wright is such a gnarly competitor especially in waves like these. I just heard everyone screaming after his wave and thought, 'Oh no, what did he do?' That wave I got was smaller, which is why Mikey didn't take it knowing there was time left. It had a nice long wall, so I got to surf the whole way through and had a few barrels. It was a pretty nerve-racking heat. I am stoked to get through that."
Defending event winner Matt Wilkinson stated;
"Starting with a higher score sets you up for the rest of the heat. Before the event, I thought I was going to absolutely blow it and I was pretty wound up. All the pressure fell off when I went out there. It's good fun to surf this wave with no one out there. Making it past the third round is already a great result, but I'm not done."
