- Charli XCX & Troye Sivan Perform “1999” on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon
- British singer-songwriter Charli XCX and Australian singer-songwriter Troye Sivan appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where they performed their latest collaboration song “1999”.
The song was released in October, Charli XCX first performed the song back in June as a solo version.
On the single cover, Charli XCX and Troye Sivan dressed up in the 1999s film "The Matrix" main characters, Trinity and Neo, respectively.
She worked with Swedish writer and producer Oscar Holter for the song.
“So Oscar Holter, who works a lot with Max (Max Martin), [produced the song] – he’s amazing, I love him. Me, Noonie Bao, and Oscar were writing at Max’s place, and we did the song and sent it to Max. Max was like, “I’ve got an idea: You should change the lyric in the chorus to ‘I just wanna go back, sing ‘Hit me baby one more time,’” And we were like, “Oh my God, this guy is a fucking a genius!” That came from him, so he not only made the song better, but he also referenced himself in a song he and wrote and produced that [was big] in 1999. I was like, “That’s why he’s the king of pop.”
She said of the collaboration with Troye Sivan, “Troye and I didn’t record together. But we were sending stuff back and forth all the time. He’s actually the reason I decided to do this song. Because I had the song, and I liked it, but I wasn’t 100% sure whether it was for me, or whether it was just a cool song. And then Troye heard it, and he was like, “I wanna be on it. Like, we should do it together. It’s really cool.” I love him to the point where he is probably a bit freaked out by me. He was like, “You should do it.” I was like, “Okay, cool. I’m doing it.” So that’s how it happened.”
