World Surf League: Johanne Defay & Filipe Toledo Win Jeep Surf Ranch Pro presented by Adobe
World Surf League the Championship Tour the sixth stop, Jeep Surf Ranch Pro took place at Lemoore in California between June 18 and 20, 2021.
Before the event, Adriano de Souza, who is the 2015 World Champion, announced he would retire from World Surf League the Championship Tour this year.
Featuring a format unlike any other Championship Tour stop, this event utilizes a leaderboard ranking system that rewards the combined top wave scores on the left and right.
The best-scoring left and right create each surfer's total score. For Qualifying, brackets are six-person heats combining two runs of two waves each and the top two surfers from each heat win a bonus run of an extra two waves. For Semifinals and Final, each surfer rides four waves over two runs.
In Women's Final, Johanne Defay (FRA) defeated Carissa Moore (HAW) and claimed her first victory of 2021 season. It is her first victory since the 2018 Uluwatu CT. Also she took back-to-back podiums following Rip Curl Rottnest Search in Australia.
Johanne Defay said, “I feel like my surfing was a bit more strong this year. My legs, I don't think I could have ridden another wave. Everyone wants to be in the top five and get a chance for the title. It is definitely putting a lot of excitement into surfing and in crowning a World Champion. I'm really impressed with the level of women surfing here at Surf Ranch. Carissa, Sally, and Tati all did a great job. It's the first time I do two finals in a row, and I'm very happy with my results.”- 2QQ0VA2crxQ

Meanwhile, in Men's Final, Filipe Toledo (BRA) competed against Gabriel Medina (BRA) and took his second victory of 2021 following Boost Mobile Margaret River Pro in Australia.
Filipe Toledo said, “It feels amazing, especially being in a final against Gabriel. I thank God for the opportunity to be here with my family and my kids. To win on Father's Day, my family's here, my father's here, it's so special. This is my third CT final at the Surf Ranch, and the last two times Gabriel beat me. It feels really good to take the win this time. Gabriel has been putting on a show the entire year, and is already in the WSL Final 5 at Trestles so winning against him means a lot to me.”
