Nelly Furtado Releases New Album “7”
Canadian singer-songwriter Nelly Furtado released her seventh studio album “7” on September 20, 2024 via Nelstar Entertainment and 21 Entertainment Group.
This marks her first album in seven years since the 2017 album “The Ride”.
The album comprises a 14-track, featuring guest appearances from Bomba Estéreo, Tove Lo, SG Lewis, Gray Hawken, Blxckie, Charlotte Day Wilson, Williane 108, Charmie, Taborah Johnson, and Tynomi Banks.
She wrote 400–500 pieces of music in 4 years and recorded a hundred songs in the last 18 months. In the end, she chose 14 songs for the album.
Nelly Furtado said, “I made 400-500 pieces of music in 4 years. My ADHD doesn't always allow for me to organize creations in a methodical way so it's hard to explain how we have chosen 14 songs that magically rose to the top of the heap. They come together just by nature of being in the same collection, 7, kind of like random seashells that may be similar but not at all alike.”- Nelly Furtado said of the album, “I started going out again and I kept hearing my music being played and remixed by DJs, and at the same time, my eldest daughter was showing me how the online community - including a whole new audience of Gen Z fans - were discovering and embracing my music, 20 years later.”
She continued, “I heard the calling! I found my voice again. I came to the studio lost and searching for my artistic identity. I had done a lot of reflection and self-work during my seven years outside of music so I was bringing that growth into the studio with me.”
She added, “This collection of songs is so personal. It reflects my journey through heartbreak and finding my confidence as an artist again, into the pure joy and celebration you feel when you're nurturing your passion and are part of a community.” - Nelly Furtado told GRAMMY.com about the album recording process and the album title, “When I started recording this album four years ago, I started getting a bunch of friends in a room, setting up wedges and monitors and speakers with a bunch of microphones on amps and instruments, recording absolutely everything we're saying and doing. I started recording in Toronto and would invite my friends, and all of a sudden, I found myself spending Friday nights there. It became this very social event with lots of collaborations. I loved the way my voice sounded back at me through the speakers in real time, much like those soundchecks I remembered so fondly.”
She continued, “Halfway through the recording process, I started meeting producers like Dom Dolla. We had reached out to each other because we were going to perform at the same festival, Beyond The Valley in Australia, where I also met SG Lewis. I was blessed to meet these really key collaborators for me who are making great current music I had special connections with. I just felt blessed to be so open.”
She said, “To be totally honest, the songs are all so different. It was the only title that made sense because it's more like a collection. Fashion collections don't really have titles, they're just called collection number 10 or 21. This is my collection seven. [And] it's been seven years since my last album, and it's my seventh album. I love the simplicity [of the title]. Honestly, sometimes I feel a bit like a music librarian trapped in a pop star body. So it's really appropriate for me to put together this random collection of songs and just call it a number, like a librarian.”
Nelly Furtado explained about some tracks for the album.
Corazón” featuring Bomba Estéreo“
How do you explain a song that took 2 years to make, in three different cities, with an army of people, and that's just the one song named Corazón. I first felt the energy of what Corazón would become on a trip to Colombia with a couple of friends and then I kept on recording and four years later I have an album, and it's really always about the journey, honestly. That's the sad part because you can't relive the journey - the magic and lessons happen DURING the journey.”
“Love Bites” featuring Tove Lo & SG Lewis“
“I felt called back to music from the DJ community. DJs were remixing my songs at concerts, clubs, and on social media, and I realized how much people like to dance and escape to my music. It's the healthiest vice you can have, and I love the opportunity to write music that lets people escape more than anything.”

“I was going through major, like, life change, a major breakup. And it's so poignant sometimes when the heart is tender, and you're figuring yourself out. I feel like everyone's life is like this, and I get to put it into songs. I'm glad you like it. That means a lot to me. We got to perform it recently, and I love singing it. Yeah. It feels really pure. It reminds of, like, the past. Like, it reminds me of when I was, like, a little kid sitting in the living room, like, listening to my dad's, like, vinyl collection, you know? We still have this old, like, German stereo. Like, we kept it, and he's since passed about five years ago, but - so that one just takes me somewhere. I'm not sure where, but it's a nice, warm, fuzzy feeling for sure.”
