  • WILLOW Performs at NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

  • American singer-songwriter WILLOW appeared on NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert to perform “symptom of life”, “Split”, “Wait a Minute!”, “run!” and “b i g f e e l i n g s”.

This marks her musical guest debut on Tiny Desk Concert.
“symptom of life”, “run!” and “b i g f e e l i n g s” from her upcoming sixth studio album “empathogen”, which is out this Friday (May 3rd) via Three Six Zero Records. Especially, “run!” is an unreleased track, and was performed in front of audience for the first time.
“Split” was released as the fourth single from the fifth studio album “COPINGMECHANISM” in 2022,
“Wait a Minute!” is featured on the debut album “Ardipithecus” and was released as the second single in 2015.
    This time, all songs were arranged in a jazz style, as with recent singles “symptom of life” and “b i g f e e l i n g s”.
WILLOW told NPR Music, “Just wants to feel it and be in the vibe.”
  • The new album “empathogen” comprises a 12-track, featuring collaborations with Jon Batiste and St. Vincent.
WILLOW told Rolling Stone about the album, “For Coping Mechanism I was almost never sober in the studio. And for this new album, I was sober for every single recording session... I feel like my mind state was extremely different. There was so much more gratitude, so much more resonance with myself, and so much more coming back to my roots with these new songs that are coming out.”

  • WILLOW explained about some songs.

    “symptom of life”
“The song has a very beautiful whimsical nature but holds a lot of mystery. There's this beautiful light coming in through the piano, but also this syncopated rhythm of the bass bringing in that mysterious element. A juxtaposition of light and dark.”

    “b i g f e e l i n g s”
“The piano part of this song is so dense and dissonant but also darkly beautiful. I wrote 'b i g f e e l i n g s' during a week where I was coming to terms with my own emotional patterns that I hadn't known were there. Musically, it has a darkness and complexity that reflects what we all experience in our own minds. The song is about accepting those intense feelings that you have no idea what to do with.”

    “Split”
“I feel like there were so many songs on the album ('COPINGMECHANISM') that were just so high octane, hardcore just intense, and I really felt like there needed to be some purely emotional just ballads on there, honestly. Just giving some emotional rock ballads. And there were moments where I was like, 'Oh no, I want to keep this crazy energy,' but it needed the variety, it needed the balance. But it is definitely a softer take on the sound of the album.”
