Tara MacLean Drops New Music Video for “Lay Here in the Dark”
Canadian singer-songwriter Tara MacLean published her debut memoir “Song of the Sparrow” on March 14, 2023 via HarperCollins.
Following the book, she released the soundtrack album “Sparrow” on March 31, 2023.
From the soundtrack, Tara MacLean dropped a new music video for “Lay Here in the Dark” directed by Nathan Sizemore.
The track was written by Tara MacLean and produced by Daniel Ledwell.
Tara MacLean said of the song, “At an excruciatingly dark moment of loneliness, I was going through a divorce at the time of writing “Lay Here In The Dark”, I reached for my guitar and I am sure this song saved me that night. It is an earnest call to find gratitude in the depths of pain, to not push away life's challenges, and to face ourselves in order to change and heal.”
She continued, “Producer Daniel Ledwell has such a magnificent touch with creating songs that are both epic and intimate. We wanted the song to feel spacious in its bleak and lonely landscape - but then the light comes in. It leaves the listener with a sense of hopefulness, an understanding that no matter how dark it gets, we are never alone.”
She said of the vide, “The music video beautifully captures this theme, utilizing an iPhone flashlight. Making the video was amazing. Daniel Lanois, who is my favourite all time musician and songwriter, had listened to the song and gave me the idea to do the video in the dark, on a bed with a flashlight. I spoke to director Nathan Sizemore from Confound Films, who I was a huge fan of and had worked with before. He was totally into the concept and he nailed it. I got a room at the Broadview Hotel in Toronto and we filmed it in 4 hours.”
The soundtrack album “Sparrow” comprises 10-track, Produced by Daniel Ledwell.
Tara MacLean said, “In 2020 I signed a book deal with HarperCollins to write a memoir, Song of the Sparrow, about my life in music. While I was writing the memoir, new original songs were born and old songs found new meaning. Music has always been the key to my survival in life, so it is natural for there to be a soundtrack to accompany the book. To capture the new songs and revisit the old, I went into the studio to record the soundtrack to the book which is Sparrow.”
She added, “Sparrow, is a journey, encompassing songs I wrote as a teenager and as the woman I am now. The process has shown me that I am still the same in many ways, exploring and navigating the heart, and looking for poetry in everything. My story is universal; it is one of growth and unfolding, letting go of the things that hold us back and soaring as high as we can.”
