Theo Tams Covers The Beatles' “I Wanna Hold Your Hand”
Canadian singer-songwriter Theo Tams released a cover of British rock band The Beatles' “I Wanna Hold Your Hand” on January 12, 2023.
The song is the follow-up to the cover of Randy Newman's “Feels Like Home”, which was released last November.
The original version of the song was released by The Beatles in 1963. It was the first Beatles record to be made using four-track equipment.
The track was written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney. The song reached No. 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles chart.
“I'm a huge Beatles fan and Across The Universe is one of my favourite movies,” Theo Tams said of the song. “I think there is such an art to interpreting songs in a different way and that movie did that so well. I love their rendition of "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" but have only found it with a female voice, so decided to release my own.”
- He continued, “I decided to take an approach to this song which focuses on the lead vocal, creating a feeling of recognition and nostalgia but also a bit of mystery. I sang this version of the song with a certain type of coyness which lends itself to the lyrics' intimacy.”
He added, “I am not a fan of sappy lyrics at all, but this one just sits with me. Sometimes something so simple can seem profound. I love that they didn't try to overcomplicate the song lyrically, it's just a sweet love letter. It doesn't need to be flushed out with metaphors or poetic prowess, it can be as straightforward as 'I Wanna Hold Your Hand'.”
