Japanese-British singer-songwriter Rina Sawayama appeared on BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge to perform “Hold The Girl” and Billie Eilish's cover “Happier Than Ever”.
“Hold The Girl” is included on her sophomore album of the same name, which was released on September 16, 2022.
Rina Sawayama told Apple Music about the song, “I wrote this with Barney Lister and Jonny Lattimer in the first session I ever did with Barney. He was producing the song and I was throwing out all these ideas, like: 'So, I want it to be country, and I want the beginning to sound like Bon Jovi, and I really also want to then do a garage drop.' Luckily he agreed! It was a very, very hard song to balance: I think we must have gone back and forth about 20 times on the production, and then another 20 times on the mix. I was trying to make it really big and orchestral, but also a pop song. 'Hold the Girl' was the song that really unblocked me and made me excited to write again. “Happier Than Ever” was released by American singer-songwriter Billie Eilish from her sophomore album of the same name in 2021.
The song reached No. 4 on the UK Singles chart and No. 11 on the US Billboard Hot 100.
Rina Sawayama said, “This is the dilemma about [the] Live Lounge, 'cause it's like songs you love so much… you don't want to change it too much, but you want to change it a little bit so it's fun.
