  • World Surf League: Filipe Toledo Wins Oi Rio Pro, His First Win in Three Years in Brazil

  • Oi Rio Pro watched Filipe Toledo (BRA) took his hometown victory at Saquarema, Rio de Janeiro on May 18, 2018.


    This marks his first win in three years in Brazil. The 2nd place was tour rookie Wade Carmichael (AUS), who received his best result this year.
    Filipe Toledo showcased perfect 10 ride in Heat 1 of Round 4, taking down Michael Rodriguez (BRA) and Ian Gouveia (BRA).
    Followed by, he defeated Kolohe Andino (USA) in Quarterfinal and current point leader Julian Wilson (AUS) in Semifinal.
    Meanwhile, Wade Carmichael defeated 2014 World Champion Gabriel Medina (BRA) with a huge margin in Quarterfinal. He won against Ezekiel Lau (HAW) with 13.17 points in Semifinal. He advance to his first Final of the 2018 season.
    In the Final, Filipe Toledo sucsessed two tube ridings and earned a total of 17.10 points. Wade Carmichael showed two tube ridings, as well, but those were not deep more than Toledo. Filipe Toledo was crowned the 2018 Oi Rio Pro champion.

    After the Final, Filipe Toledo said;
    “This is Brazil, that’s our energy, that’s our feeling, it’s emotional and amazing coming back home. It’s the last heat, your last chance, that’s what I put in my mind. It’s the big show and it’s my time.
    Coming back home and having this amazing support from the crowd, especially for my baby Koa, it is unbelievable. My son and my family are motivation for me. I am one of those athletes who performs under pressure. Koa means warrior and I definitely was a warrior to go out there and get that trophy."
