  • World Surf League: Margaret River Women’s Pro Round 2 & 3, Three World Champions Carissa Moore, Stephanie Gilmor, Tyler Wright Advance to Quarterfinals

  • The women completed Round 2 and 3 of the Margaret River Pro Monday in clean, sunny conditions at Main Break.

    Three world Champions Carissa Moore (3-time Wold Champ), Stephanie Gilmor (6-time World Champ) and Tyler Wright (2-time World Champ) advanced to Quarterfinals.
    In addition to three Champions, Nikki Van Dijk (AUS), Bronte Macaulay (ASU), Tatiana Weston-Webb (HAW), Lakey Peterson (USA) and Johanne Defay (12.10) will compete in Quarterfinals.
    In the Heat 1 of Round 2, Sage Erickson (USA) was injured her right foot.
    Also, two surfers were attacked by a four-metre Great White shark at Lefthanders beach in the morning and afternoon. WSL immediately put there comp on hold to assess the situation. After safety checks, the WSL resumed the comp.
    WSL said in the statement;
    "We have been alerted of a shark incident that occurred near Gracetown. The #MargiesPro is on hold while we work with local authorities. The safety of our surfers & staff is a top priority. We have mitigation protocols in place and will be enhancing those when competition resumes."

    Stephanie Gilmore said;
    "This year I told myself that I'm going to go on the attack from the very start. That's what I've committed to. The Jeep Leader jersey is what we are all chasing after. Once you get it in your hands and you put it on, it's a powerful feeling. But you can't let that feeling overwhelm you. You have to find a balance. Consistency is what wins you World Titles."
    I watched Carissa's heat right before mine. It's so nice to see her get comfortable because she starts throwing her fins and doing some spins. I was really inspired by that heat. It made me want to go out there and kill it. Especially now that Round 3 is an elimination round. It forces everyone to push themselves."

    Carissa Moore said;
    "The waves are pumping right now. This is the first day of the waiting period where there hasn't been too much wind. It's a great, playful size right now. I was so excited. The goal is to do something progressive like that whenever the section allows it. Luckily in that heat I was able to put up a few scores, so knowing that if I wanted to improve I had to do something big. It gave me the opportunity to let go a little."
