  • Close Talker Announces New Album “The Sprawl”, Shares New Song “Exodus”

  • Canadian alt-rock trio Close Talker, consisting of Will Quiring (vocals/guitar), Matthew Kopperud (guitar/keyboards), and Christopher Morien (drums), has announce their fifth studio album “The Sprawl” will be released on March 22, 2024.

It is their firs body of work in five years since the 2019 album “How Do We Stay Here?”.
The album comprises 11-track, produced by Will Quiring.
“The Sprawl” accounts for the years 2013-2019 in Close Talker: six years of full-on writing, recording, touring, rinse, wash, repeat.
Close Talker said of the EP, “At the end of 2019, we stopped. For how long? That was unknown. But it was pretty clear that something had to change for us to keep going. And the only way to figure out that change was to take a break. Turns out that 3 months later, the entire world took a break and it made going away pretty easy.”

They continued, “That next year, we all went our separate ways. Chris moved to Victoria, Matt started a company building homes, and will began composing for film. For years, this band sat firmly on the front burner, taking precedence over everything. And we finally let go of that. It was freeing and incredibly needed, but as the months dragged on, the burn out started to fade, and the heart of why we loved doing this started to become more and more clear. Reminiscing brought memories, which brought inspiration. iPhone demos started to resurface in the group chat, which led to us spending a few days at Chris's family cabin to see what we had, and what we wanted to do. Fast forward 3 and a half years, and we are proud to announce our forthcoming record, The Sprawl.”
They added, “Engineered ourselves in Will's basement, The Sprawl marks the years between 2013 and 2019, and the fallout afterwards. Discovering how you want to grow is never bad, but rarely painless. And this record is us altering the foundation of the band without giving up on it. If you're still here, thanks for that. This record's for you.”

  • From the album, the band released the second single called “Exodus” on November 3, 2023.
The track was written by Will Quiring, Matthew Kopperud, and Christopher Morien. Produced by Will Quiring.
The band said of the song, “For years the band sat firmly on the front burner taking precedence over nearly everything. We chased opportunities, often spreading ourselves thin and not always taking time to recognize collateral damage. To be fair, we loved nearly every minute of it. 'Exodus' leans into the quiet confidence that comes with realizing, maybe you're not content. It doesn't have to come shrouded with guilt, but rather comes with a sense of peace; just being self aware of your weaknesses, even if that weakness is ambition. Discovering how you want to grow is never bad, but also rarely painless.”
