  • Black Honey Premieres New Song “Lemonade” on BBC Radio 1

  • London-based indie rock band Black Honey, consisting of Izzy Phillips (lead vocals/guitar), Chris Ostler (guitar), Tommy Taylor (bass) and Alex Woodward (drums), premiered a new song “Lemonade” on BBC Radio 1's Future Sounds with Clara Amfo.

The song is the first single since their third studio album “A Fistful of Peaches”, which was released back in March.
The track was written by Alex Woodward, Christopher Ostler, Dimitri Tikovoi, Isobel Phillips, Olly Burden, and Thomas Taylor. Produced by Dimitri Tikovoi.
The band lead singer Izzy Phillips said of the song, “I think we all got sold this 'dream big' concept. I'm having an existential realisation that we are just playing a game that's designed to make rich people richer. I'm not sure what skills I learned in school other than capitalistic ones. They say when life gives you lemons make lemonade…well sometimes that's just not f*cking doable. How about don't make lemonade. How about the measure is to just exist and try and enjoy it, not take your bad situations and turn them into commercial gain.”
  • Izzy Phillips told Clara Amfo about the song, “I just feel like there was this entire era where it was like work hard and your dreams come true, and I'm just like, how about don't. My new era is like I need to rest now like I need to know how about couldn't make lemonade and maybe that's okay.”
Alex Woodward continued, “There's so much pressure on like, everyone's say, when life gives you lemons make lemonade and I think the song sort of representing it's okay to not. If you're not feeling like you want to do something, you don't have to.”

  • Izzy Phillips added, “I do feel a bit like eye rolls about the whole thing. I'm like, how about sometimes it's just really hard life it's just can be really hard. And I'm sort of like an air an arrow. I'm accepting that and leaning into it rather than like, if I look at my life and compare my life to the Internet all the time, I just feel rubbish about it.”
The accompanying music video was directed by Craig Hemming. On the video, Izzy Phillips played 14 characters.
She said of the video “The video is a 12 character portrait series about different types of disappointment. We named each one and wrote a story for them. I wanted the ones we would consider successful societally to still be failures.”
She continued, “14 in total and so they were like, 'Don't worry guys. You don't have to make music videos anymore.' Just make tick tock So then I'm just somehow now filming a 14 character portrait series, which takes three weeks to film instead of a day.”
