  • Declan McKenna Announces New Album “What Happened to the Beach?”, Premieres New Song “Nothing Works” on BBC Radio 1

  • British singer-songwriter Declan McKenna has announced his third studio alum “What Happened to the Beach?” will be released on February 9, 2024.

From the album he premiered a new song “Nothing Works” on BBC Radio 1's Future Sounds with Clara Amfo.
The song is the second single off of the album, following “Sympathy” released back in July.
The track was written and produced by Declan McKenna, with production by Gianluca Buccellati.
The accompanying lyric video was directed by Reuben Bastienne-Lewis.
Declan McKenna told Clara Amfo about the song, “I tend to leave chaos leaning, I think. Particularly if you've got like a big ending or if you've got like a slope in a song that's going up like sometimes, you can't just stop it you got it's got a crash and burn and I'm and I also have like a key change in that guitar solo, which I'm very, very proud of. So I need to tell everyone that.”
  • He continued, “I guess it's almost about throwing caution to the wind really like it is kind of focuses on I don't know doing things away that suits other people really and like it kind of is just making fun of that really like it honestly when I started when I figured out like because I had a few ideas for the song but I didn't really know what it was about. And then when we kind of figured it out. The lyrics came very quickly. And I just it was the last song actually that I made for this record, and it was kind of like me justifying those change sort of route that I'd taken with all of it because there was almost like a question mark and like, 'Are you sure are you sure it's you know you want to do it this way. And I was like, nothing else is gonna work,' like this is what I like right now. So I want to do. Yeah, it's kind of, there's it I think it has a few different perspectives. So put your property right. But I didn't really thought about that.”

  • The album is his first LP in four years since the 2020 album “Zeros” and comprises 12-track.
Declan McKenna said of the album, “Second album was scary, but it also kind of like almost didn't happen like just the period of time that it came in was like so chaotic, like obviously all the lockdowns and everything. It was like we got to do everything that we wanted to do in the end, but it was like such a long slog. So this one feels just like really like, we're going for it now. And I'm just really proud of it. I think I've had a lot plenty of time to like, think about what I wanted to do and develop their ideas and just make something that suits me now and this for every album I think has been for me a really good. They've progressed in a way that just shows my taste at that point in time. And the way I like to listen to music is kind of on display as much as, my own like creativity is just like, I love to get perspective and just listen to things and be like, is this really you know, my favorite record I can make right now. And I'd say I'm really proud of it because I think I feel very, very productive actually at the minute, I feel like I don't want to spend another four years on the next one because I've actually a couple of years probably written about two three albums worth of material. And not just stuff that I didn't put on an album because it wasn't good enough just other stuff that sounds kind of different stuff that doesn't quite fit the bill on this one. So it's been a really productive time. I'm glad to have finally something tangible out of it.”
He added, “The beaches are changing. Beaches are a good indicator of change. You can see a lot of that there's a lot of things cropping up on a beach shouldn't be there. You can tell the weather's saying you can tell you know other creatures they used to live on the beach aren't there anymore. A lot of things that beach says but I just like the mystery of it is actually a lyric in the first song on the album, which is not released yet. Which is one of my favorites and was probably one of the like in terms of the sounds like defining tunes that kind of sent me towards what I wanted to do for the album. So it kind of made sense that one of the lyrics in that song titled.”
