Los Angeles-based Canadian singer-songwriter, Kala released his debut album “Diary of a Depressed Creative” on May 19, 2023.
He teamed up with producer duo Judge & Jury, consisting of Howard Benson and Neil Sanderson, on the album.
The album comprises 12-track, with guest collaborators from Todd Barriage, Billy Martin, Luke Holland, and Kellin Quinn.
Produced by Kala, Howard Benson, Neil Sanderson, Todd Barriage, and Billy Martin.
Kala said of the album, “I wanted to make my debut album something that would resonate with my teenage self. When I was growing up, bands like Good Charlotte, Linkin Park, Blink-182, SWS and others completely changed my life. Diary of a Depressed Creative is an homage to my teenage years. I grew up in a completely broken home, sleeping on friends' couches in an attempt to run away from the rampant drug abuse and alcoholism within my childhood home.”- He continued, “I felt like there isn’t a lot of music out right now that was doing the same thing for me, so I made it my mission to funnel all of my trauma into 12 songs that would help kids out there who have dealt with the same things as me - and hopefully, this album would be the spark that begins healing for them."
He added, “It's like as I started to create this album, I began to attract all of these people who influenced me from the very beginning, and I think it's a very special full-circle moment that's able to inspire people who listen to the album - it shows them what's possible, even from a kid who was born in a 6k population town in the middle of nowhere in Canada with absolutely 0 connections in the music world.” -
Kala said of “Love//Hate”, “‘Love//Hate’ was written when I was at one of the lowest points in my life - losing a lot of my friends, nothing seemed to be going well for me, and my mental health was absolutely plummeting - I wasn't sure if I even wanted to keep making music anymore because it felt like more pain than it was worth. Then, I saw Kellin Quinn post about asking to help produce up-and-coming artists. I sent him an email with a couple of instrumentals I made as well as my other music and he thought the work I was doing was beautiful. He scheduled a phone call and we wrote LOVE//HATE over 2 years ago…the song is an incredibly important part of my journey because for the first time in my life I was validated by a legendary musician and I will never ever forget what he did for me in that moment. Kellin changed my life with this song, and that's a debt I'll never be able to repay.”
