Director Makes Surprising “Thor: Love and Thunder” Admission
- The Marvel Universe will soon be due another adventure with everyone's favorite hammer-wielding Norse God with the eagerly-awaited release of “Thor: Love and Thunder”.
Due on July 8, the latest film from the Marvel Universe will tell the story of Chris Hemsworth's Thor after the events of Ragnarok. Also starring Natalie Portman, it promises to be one of the summer's biggest films. Hopefully, it is better on screen than on paper, as director Taika Waititi admitted it feel's “cringey”.
“I wanted to embrace this thing that I was always a bit dismissive of, and explore this idea of love, and show characters who do believe in love," he said in a recent interview with Empire. “On paper, it feels kinda of cringey to me, but there's a way of doing it with cool characters making a cool movie, and also having a thing that no fan ever wants in a superhero movie, which is people talking about love, and characters kissing.”
Waititi picked up the Thor franchise after Dark World, and fans generally agree he breathed new life into the series with Ragnarok. Hemsworth, Portman and Christina Bale make up a superb cast for the upcoming film, which will always have a loyal fanbase courtesy of Thor's standing in pop culture.
- As a character, Thor extends well beyond the Marvel Universe and has been featured in digital media throughout the ages. As well as films, the character has reached a new audience through the medium of video gaming, featuring in big titles such as Assassin's Creed Valhalla and Too Human. Gamers can wield the hammer on mobile devices in Thor: The Dark World or Thor: War of Tapnarok. Those inclined towards online casino games can find Power of Thor Megaways among the Gala Spins titles, which uses the accepted iconography of the Norse God, such as a hammer and horned helmet. Those same items are featured heavily in Thor: Lord of Storms, also on iOS and Android.
What is not featured heavily in those games is Chris Hemsworth, but it is his portrayal over almost all of the others which is becoming the accepted benchmark. There's also little in the way of love or discussions of love in the video game titles, and yet Waititi is confident even with the introduction of such themes, his film is still worth watching.
“It's a fantastic film,” he added. “I don't try to control my films or how they turn out. I sort of let them appear to me. And with this film, I'm like, 'Hey, you're kind of cooler than the thing I was originally hoping to make.' Tonally it's where I've always wanted it.”
The film is the fourth in the series, with filming beginning in January 2021 and ending in June. It was due to hit theaters in November 2021 but was delayed until February because of the pandemic. In December 2020, it was shifted to May 2022, but reshoots took place earlier this year as part of the post-production, resulting in fine-tuning, which further delayed the release date.
In addition to Hemsworth, Portman and Bale, there are roles for Hollywood heavyweights Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Jeff Goldblum, Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper.
