World Surf League: John John Florence and Courtney Conlogue Win Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach
- Men's and Women's Championship Tour the 2nd stop, Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach took place at Bells Beach in Victoria Australia between April 17th and 27th. Celebrating its 58th year running and Rip Curl's 50th anniversary.
The final days witnessed John John Florence (HAW) and Courtney Conlogue (USA) claimed their first victory of the 2019 season in six-to-eight foot, 1.8 - 2.4 metre waves.
Courtney Conlogue marked her third time victory for Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach, while two-time WSL Champion John John Florence his first Bells win.
Also both of competitors came back from their injury-plagued 2018 season and took the victory.
John John Florence defeated Filipe Toledo (BRA) in the Final and took his first win since 2017's Drug Aware Margaret River Pro. But the Heat was a close battle with 14.30 and 13.83 points.
This result marks John John Florence moved up to No. 1 of Men's CT Jeep Leaderboard the replacement of Quicksilver Pro winner Italo Ferreira (BRA).
Courtney Conlogue competed against Malia Manuel (HAW), who advanced to the Final of Bells Beach for the first time, in the Final.
But Courtney Conlogue showcased perfect 10 points ride and took down Malia Manuel.
- "It's a surreal feeling to have won this event," John John Florence said. "Especially an event like this where we started at Winki with small waves then to how big it was yesterday and then just totally perfect today. There has been so many different faces and challenges and then surfing against Filipe (Toledo) is always pretty scary."
"This was definitely the most testing Final day of my career," he continued. "From how big it was yesterday to the matchups today, it was really tiring and needed a lot of energy for the two heats yesterday and three heats today. I was just trying to surf my best and focus on myself, and it worked out. I couldn't have done it without my team and my family. I just wanted to say thank you to everyone in Torquay for letting us surf your waves. It's been so fun."
"What an event! I went from being out of rhythm with the ocean to the ocean being in the kind of rhythm I enjoy," Courtney Conlogue said. "I was trying to contain my ‘grom froth' watching the waves all day. It feels incredible to get another Bell, they're not easy to come by. Every single Bell has its own special path and journey that got me it and this one was definitely an amazing one to win."
"The conditions were amazing today and it was great to share the Final with Malia," she continued. "It was unreal. She's been surfing spectacularly this whole competition. When I heard she got an 8-point ride I was like, ‘It's on'. To come back and post a Perfect 10 felt so amazing. My team means everything and I couldn't have done it without them."
