  • Ben Heffernan Releases New EP “drive in movies”: Streaming

  • London-based singer-songwriter Ben Heffernan released his third EP “drive in movies” on August 27, 2021. It is his first EP in three years.

The EP comprises of 5-track, including preceding singles “movie nights” and “everything i've ever wanted”.
Ben Heffernan said of the EP, “drive in movies is a personal, cinematic collection of songs that chronicles key events in the life of a teenager: falling in love for the first time, losing someone for the first time, frustration with the world around you, and the speed in which one's young life tends to change.”
He wrote five songs in 2018 and 2019. He said, “These songs were written in 2018 and 2019 and feel like a little time capsule of that period of my life. I'm absolutely thrilled with how they turned out.”
He sampled some voices from his favorite films on each song of the EP. “I've had a few people interested in the movie samples on the “drive in movies” EP. Taken from 'A Star Is Born', 'His Girl Friday', and 'The Last Time I Saw Paris'. Watching through old public domain movies on youtube was one of my favourite parts of making this EP.”
  • Ben Heffernan explained of some tracks.

    “movie nights”
“Set on a park bench at night, highlighting the kind of spaces that can feel like a world of their own when you are a teenager, 'movie nights' is a song about your first brush with getting older. Movies suggest that many of a teenager's 'firsts' happen in well-lit, aesthetically pleasing spaces, when in reality, many of them happen in the most mundane, unassuming places.”

    “everything i've ever wanted”
“I wrote this song in august 2018 and started playing it out at shows right away. I spent late 2018 and early 2019 playing and travelling a lot, so this song will always remind me of that. A lot of good memories from that time.
Playing a song live a lot is a great way to learn more about it - you can often feel what sections work and probably more importantly, which ones need work. since this song was so new when I was playing it live during that period, I was constantly trying different approaches to see what felt best, particularly in the bridge (starts at 2:39).
It wasn't until september 2019 that i wrote the bridge that's there now (scroll to hear the original voice memo for that section). I felt that since the rest of the lyrics were so sweet, the song needed something to bring it back down to earth a little bit. I'm glad I got it right in the end, because it's my favourite part of the song now.”
