Faultlines Returns with New Song “Freedom”
Los Angeles-based folk-pop duo Faultlines, consisting of Ashley Morgan and John Flanagan, returned with a new song “Freedom” on August 5, 2024.
The song is their first music since the 2023 single “Me Without You”.
Originally, the duo wrote the song back in 2020, but decided to take to their microphone to get political on the track during another election year, with the United States on the battlefront of two separate global conflicts and the Supreme Court stripping away 50 years of legal precedents.
It was written by Jared Mitchell and John Flanagan, and produced by David Kidd.
The duo has already filmed a music video for the song, which is coming soon.
John Flanagan said of the song, “It was the height of national hysteria when Jared Mitchell and I sat down to write ‘Freedom’ during the 2020 lockdown. The song sat a few years collecting dust in the Faultlines’ demo pile, waiting for the right moment to record.”
Ashley Morgan added, “It was after the devastating shooting at a Nashville elementary school in 2023 that I watched with frustration as two Tennessee Representatives were expelled for their participation in a peaceful protest against gun violence. Listening to the demo again, it was clear this is a message that needs to be heard.”- The duo shared on social media, “In our daily lives, I don’t think either of us see ourselves as particularly political people. Yes, we like to stay informed, read well-reported articles on the facts, but we don’t watch cable news, debate strangers on Facebook, or behave like Karen’s in public.”
They continued, “We engage as artists, responding to the collective grief of a generation, of a restless world, and as artists, we’ve been given a voice - and a microphone. How can we be given this opportunity and not use it for good - to amplify and spotlight the quiet suffering of societies marginalized and oft maligned people?” -
They added, “We all exist on one planet, and yet our focus is drawn to the same issues in every election cycle - in fighting and division ensue, while our leaders are not held accountable. Why do our problems feel like they’re getting bigger instead of getting better? Our squabbles amongst ourselves keep the powerful in power. Step back and look at the whole. If we unite, we have greater democratic power to affect change and start new, productive conversations about the future of our world and our society. Freedom isn’t something from the past, a concept for cobwebbed documents, but a breathing and evolving resolve. We cannot afford to forget it.”
