- World Surf League: Julian Wilson & Courtney Conlogue Win Quiksilver Pro/ Roxy Pro France
- Quiksilver Pro France and Roxy Pro France's final day ran at Landes in Nouvelle-Aquitaine on October 12th.
Julian Wilson (AUS) claimed his second victory of the 2018 Championship Tour at 2018 Quiksilver Pro France since Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast. He defeated wild card Ryan Callinan (AUS) in the Final.
Beginning of the Final, Ryan Callinan earned 6.83 and 7.40 points with aerial, and led the Heat. While, Julian Wilson gained 6.67 points, but he struggled to get high score. 5 minutes remaining, he launched a huge backside rotation, landed cleanly and scored an 8.67 to take the win.
Gabriel Medina (BRA) was defeated by Julian Wilson in Semifinal, but he moved up to No. 1 of Jeep Leaderboard, because Filipe Toledo (BRA) was defeated by Ryan Callinan in Round 3.
After the Final, winner Julian Wilson said:
"I want to dedicate this win to Pierre Agnes. He was such a beautiful human being who has done so much for surfing in France. It's a really special day. To win for him, to get back in the World Title race and to have my wife and child here is amazing. It's all fairly overwhelming."
It's something I know that can make a big point of difference and we've worked on the right times to go to the air. Today there was so many opportunities and if I dialed them I knew I'd be rewarded."
Runner-up Ryan Callinan said:
"We've been working on my completions and having nothing to lose here so I surfed with a load of freedom. I've also focused a lot more on the waves I'm surfing, rather the opponent or the conditions or the scores. I'm being way more present in every moment and taking everything as it comes and that seems to be working for me way better. To make a CT Final here was beyond anything I could have ever expected."
Meanwhile, 2018 Roxy Pro France final witnessed Courtney Conlogue (USA) took her second victory of the 2018 season, following Vans US Open of Surfing. She defeated defending champion of this event Carissa Moore (HAW) in Semifinal and competed with 17-year-old injury replacement Macy Callaghan (AUS) in the Final.
Courtney Conlogue showcased aggressive off the top, layback and cutback, and earned 7.33 and 7.43 with a total of 14.76 points.
Macy Callaghan gained 5.33 points at the first ride, afterwards she tried frontside and backside surfing, but her scores were not enough to win.
Winner Courtney Conlogue said:
"I said before the Final that if I can find some rhythm and if the ocean and I can link up and have the same high voltage then I can put in a statement performance which I think I did. The crazy thing is I'm not where I want to be right now. I still have a lot of work to do to get ready for 2019. I want to fine tune and maintain that process and have a good time too. But this win has definitely fast tracked that. It's a huge win in a place I love. I couldn't be happier."
Runner-up Macy Callaghan said:
"I haven't even made the Final of a big QS before, so to make my first CT Final is unbelievable. I'm disappointed that I didn't perform to my best in the Final, but the bigger picture is so positive. There's been a big change and that is that I believe in myself and my surfing. I've learned so much here in France and had so much fun doing it. I'll never forget this experience."
