  • World Surf League: Corona Bali Protected Round 3 & 4 at Keramas in Bali

  • The Corona Bali Protected ran Round 3 at Keramas in Bali in three-to-five (1 - 1.9 meter) foot waves on May 31.


    Next day, men's Round 4 and women's Round 3 took place at the same beach in four-to-six (1.5 - 2 meter) foot waves.
    Men's Round 3 saw the reigning World Champion John John Florence (HAW), current number one of Jeep Leaderboard Julian Wilson (HAW) and defending Champion of this event Joel Parkinson (AUS) were defeated in the close games.
    Especially, John John Florence was took out by 2018 rookie Jesse Mendes (BRA) and Julian Wilson was eliminated by wildcard Mikey Wright (AUS), respectively. Both of Jesse Mendes and Mikey Wright came back to win in one minute remaining.
    John Johnson Florence struggled to win this year and has been defeated by Round 3 in all events.
    Finally, Michel Bourez (PYF), Mikey Wright (AUS), Jordy Smith (ZAF) and Italo Ferreira (BRA) advanced to Quarterfinal.

    Mikey Wright said;
    "I'm really happy to be in the final 12 surfers left in the draw. Julian is so good out here at Keramas, it was great to be out here with him. I love this wave, so I hope I can have a few more heats out here."

    Jesse Mendes said;
    "I knew against a guys like John John I would have to go big to get the win. Somehow I stuck the landing but then almost fell again and was just hanging on hoping to get up and when I finally stood up I was just like ‘thank god' -- so stoked. I feel blessed to be on this Tour and to be at this event in such a beautiful place with great people. It feels amazing to make that heat."

    Mwanwhile, Women's Corona Bali Protected Round 3 watched 2-time World Champion Tyler Wright (AUS) and 6-time World Campion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) were strong and advanced to Quarterfinal.
    Jeep Leaderboard number two, Lakey Peterson (USA) won with a narrow margin of 0.03 points in Heat 3. In Heat 4, Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS) earned almost perfect 10 with deep tube riding in Heat 4, took down 3-time World Champion Carissa Moore (HAW). Also Malia Manuel (HAVE) gained 6.70 points on her last wave and led by 0.07 points ahead of Carissa Moore. Finally Malia advanced to Quarterfinal.
