Tones and I Performs “Dance Monkey” and “Never Seen The Rain” on The Ellen DeGeneres Show
- Australian singer-songwriter Toni Watson, aka Tones and I appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show to perform her smash hit “Dance Monkey” and “Never Seen The Rain”.
This marks the third time she has performed the song on the US TV, following The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and The Voice.
The song was released last May from her debut EP “The Kids Are Coming”. The single topped the official singles charts in over 30 countries.
In the UK, the song broke the record for the most weeks spent at the top of the UK Singles Chart by a female artist when it remained at the top of the chart for an eleventh week.
Tones and I said, “My manager warned me that “Dance Monkey” wouldn’t be a big track like “Johnny Run Away.” Then all of a sudden it became my biggest hit. I had people singing it back to me at Splendour in the Grass [Australian music festival in New South Wales] and it’s been on every single radio station in Australia. I didn’t write this track for radio. I wrote this song for the people at the Byron Bay hostel so we could all dance to it. People were trying to write songs to knock Lil Nas X off his perch; I didn’t try to do that. I wrote this song before his song was even released. “Dance Monkey” showed me that I’m good enough. I have confidence in the songs that I’ve written and I’m not going to change anything.”
“Never Seen The Rain” was released in July 2019. The track is also included on the debut EP.
She said of the song, “It’s my favourite one, by far. It gives me more freedom to sing in whatever voice I want […] It gives me more flexibility to have fun and be a little bit more myself (in comparison to “Dance Monkey,” which is higher) and I love what it stands for.”
On February 21st, she released alternate version of the song.
