  • Lorde Perform “California”, “Solar Power” & “Green Light” on The Late Late Show with James Corden

  • New Zealand singer-songwriter Lorde appeared on The Late Late Show with James Corden to perform “California”, “Solar Power” and “Green Light”.

“California” and “Solar Power” are included on her latest album “Solar Power”, which was released on August 20.
Lorde told Apple Music about “Solar Power”, “This song was featherlight. It's just a song about being happy in the sunshine, which is kind of a crazy move for me. But It's a bit dark and weird, with lots of cult and commune imagery. I knew that people would kind of be like, 'What the fuck is she talking about?' On the surface it's light, but it's got a lot to it.”
She said of “California”, “California and LA are places I have a huge amount of affection for. I find it really alluring and mystical and kind of dreamy, but it also totally freaks me out. It isn't where I am supposed to be right now, so I've tapped out. I've been listening to a lot of The Mamas & The Papas, so that was a melodic reference. There's kind of an eeriness to this song, and a lot of people have tried to get at that when capturing LA in movies and in music. I love the line about the kids in the line for 'the new Supreme.' It's a classic me thing to say something that is modern, but could sound classic.”

“Green Light” was released from her second studio album ”Melodrama” as the lead single in 2017.
She said of “Green Light”, “The song is actually about a heartbreak. And it's not something that I really am used to writing about. It took me a while to be able to figure out how to write about that. It was my first major heartbreak. The song is really about those moments kind of immediately after your life changes and about all the silly little things that you gravitate towards. I say, “She thinks you love the beach, you're such a liar”. What the fuck, she thinks you like the beach?! You don't like the beach! It's those little stupid things. It sounds so happy and then the lyrics are so intense obviously. And I realized I was like, “how come this thing is coming out so joyous sounding?” And I realized this is that drunk girl at the party dancing around crying about her ex-boyfriend who everyone thinks is a mess. That's her tonight and tomorrow she starts to rebuild. And that's the song for me.”

  • She spoke about why she left social media, "I did it because I felt like my brain wasn't working very well anymore leaving Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook behind was horribly difficult, the hardest thing [she's] ever done."
"I will say, the brain will make anything into a social network," she told James. "Now, my social network is the New York Times Cooking app. So, I go on the New York Times Cooking app, and I look at the comments, and I'm like, 'Oh what's this person saying?'"
She adde, "That's become a source of community for me."
