  • World Surf League: MEO Rip Curl Pro Portugal Kicks Off at Peniche in Portugal

  • The 10th stop on Men's Championship Tour, MEO Rip Curl Pro Portugal kicked off at Peniche in Portugal on October 16, 2018.

Men's Championship Tour has two events left this year. Unexpectedly, Filipe Toledo (BRA) finished 13th in last event, 2018 Quiksilver Pro France.
But Julian Wilson (AUS) won, and Gabriel Medina (BRA) took 3rd place at 2018 Quiksilver Pro France. Then Gabriel Medina moved up to top of the Jeep Leaderboard.
This result marks Gabriel Medina, Filipe Toledo and Julian Wilson are able to take the World Title.
If Gabriel Medina won at the MEO Rip Curl Pro and Filipe Toledo is less than 10th and Julian Wilson is less than 4th, Gabriel Medina will take his second World Title.
If Gabriel Medina finishes 2nd or worse in Portugal, World Title decision will go to Hawaii.
In Round 1, Julian Wilson and Gabriel Medina advanced to Round 3, but Filipe Toledo was defeated by Tomas Hermes (BRA) and he had to compete in elimination Round 2.
However, Filipe Toledo took down Samuel Pupo in Heat 1 of Round 2, he kept a position in the World Title race.
  • Gabriel Medina said:
"I'm happy to be surfing in the Jeep Leader Jersey for the first time this year and happy to catch a few waves even if its tricky out there. It's also great to be in Portugal and have this support. It feels like surfing at home because when you come in there is so much love and support. It adds motivation for sure."

    Julian Wilson said:
"It took two days to drive down here with the family, and yesterday I was pretty flat. However when I saw the ocean, I got excited and gave myself a kick in the ass and got going.
It's a powerful, intense wave that breaks close to the beach. It's physically challenging, but I'm feeling good. I'm not thinking about my shoulder, I'm just excited to miss that Round 2 and keep performing in challenging conditions under pressure."

    Filipe Toledo said:
"Round 2, World Title on the line, that was a heavy one. I had enough pressure without putting more on myself. I told myself to calm down and focus on getting barreled, which is what I did at the start of the heat."
