KWAYE Releases New Song “Runaway”
- British-Zimbabwean singer-songwriter KWAYE released a new song “Runaway” on April 16, 2021.
The song follows up “Run” released last November. Also, the track will appear on his upcoming project, which is expected to be released later this year.
The accompanying music video was directed by Ademide Udoma and Michelle Helena Janssen.
KWAYE said of the song, “Runaway is about the struggle with masculinity - what we feel as individuals vs what we are taught to believe. Tropes like 'boys don't cry' and 'man up' still exist and further the idea that emotions are a sign of weakness. We are human first, with a biology and chemistry that is unique to ourselves. I've seen and experienced what the pressures of living up to a singular idea of gender can do to a person's life, and that it is far more crippling.”
He continued, “Releasing the song has been 5 years in the making. I wrote Runaway in 2016, reflecting on the personal events of 2014 - the summer before I first flew to LA. I've since grown into the person ready to perform this, and wanted the video to be just that: A story of a boy with a fear, told by the man coming through it.”
