Mulaa Joans Releases New Song “Birthday Makeup”

London-based singer-songwriter Mulaa Joans released a new song “Birthday Makeup” on April 24, 2026.
The song received its first play during Radio 1's Future Pop with Mollie King.
The track is her third single of 2026, following “Love Letter” and “Phone Sex”.
Mulaa Joans wrote the song with producer Orlando Giannini, who also played bass and piano, two years ago. (She said, “464 days after we made this song.”)
The accompanying music visualiser was directed by Joshua Wagstaff.
Mulaa Joans told Mollie King about the song, “I feel like every girl. Especially every girl that I've spoken to, that's my age simulation. they've all had an experience before. They cried on their birthday. Someone's made them upset. So for me, it was a boy that made me cry on my birthday. And I wrote this song with this amazing, talented guy called Orlando. And I think he upset his girl from her birthday. And I was like, 'Why did he do this?' Because I was crying on my birthday too. It was like, from his perspective and from my perspective, we wrote the song. And it's literally been two years in the making. So I'm very glad that she's finally out in the world.”- She continued, “When I first wrote it was so raw and like, there was actually a version before the version that you guys have heard, like, slightly different with slightly different lyrics. And it was just so personal, like I was like, 'Oh my God, no one can ever hear this.' And then my label were like, 'Everyone's gonna hear this.' And I was like, really a personal topic, but I felt like I really needed to write it and actually going back and refining some of the lyrics to make it more like, people can relate to that, and however they want to relate to it. Now, instead of my specific situation, I really love that, because for me, it's my specific situation, but for everybody else, it's just whoever it's about. So I was very scared to put that one out, but they make up less because I don't speak to the boy that made me cry my birthday anymore. So I don't mind.”
