Beth Orton Announces New Album “The Ground Above”, Shares New Song “Waiting”
London-based singer-songwriter Beth Orton has announced her upcoming ninth studio album “The Ground Above” will be released on June 26, 2026 via Partisan Records.
It is her first album in four years, following the 2022 album “Weather Alive”.
The album comprises 8 tracks, produced by Beth Orton, working with multi-instrumentalist Shahzad Ismaily, Vernon Spring's Sam Beste, drummers Chris Vatalaro and Vishal Nayak, Trumpet player Christos Styliandes and bassist Tom Herbert. She recorded it live in the room.
Throughout the album, Beth Orton documents survival and renewal, motherhood and identity, political unease, and the ongoing choice to stay - in love, in art, and in the world.
Beth Orton said of “The Ground Above”, “In 2018 I started to find a way to tell something true of who I no longer knew myself to be. 'I'm invincible as grief, violent as a blade of Spring released'. These words kept me awake, wired me back to life. Beyond the immediate rush of the melody and chords – the realisation that I was alive because I was invincible as grief and not only because I have cockroach skills, was a revelation. It allowed me a second chance, some forgiveness towards myself and some grace to continue. It takes time for all the tributaries and rivers to find their way home. The Ground Above is a confluence of lived experience, it's been years in the threading.”- From the album, she released the second single called “Waiting” on April 20, 2026, following the title track “The Ground Above” released last month.
It was written and produced by Beth Orton. The track features Chris Vatalaro on drums, Tom Herbert on bass, Sam Beste on piano, Dave Okumu on guitar, Shahzad Ismaily on organ and bass, Christos Stylianides on trumpet, Adrian Utley on guitar, Jesse Chandler on flute, Teeny Lieberson on background vocals, and Grey McMurray on background vocals.
Beth Orton said of the song, “The song is a celebration of moving out of the holding pattern fear keeps us in.” -
