Blossoms Premieres New Song “Joke About Divorce” on BBC Radio 1

British alt-pop band Blossoms, consisting of Tom Ogden (vocals/guitar), Charlie Salt (bass), Josh Dewhurst (lead guitar), Joe Donovan (drums) and Myles Kellock (keyboards), premiered a new song “Joke About Divorce” on BBC Radio 1's New Music Show with Jack Saunders.
The song is their first new music since the 2024 album “Gary”.
On the track, the band worked with American producer Shawn Lee. In addition, British singer-songwriter Rick Astley joined the song as backing vocals.
It was written by Thomas Ogden, Charles Salt, Joseph Donovan, Joshua Dewhurst, and Myles Kellock. Produced by Shawn Lee. The track features Rick Astley on background vocals.
The accompanying music video was directed by Tom Ogden.
The band frontman Tom Ogden said of the song, “During every argument, no matter how big or small, there's always that moment where humour could completely disarm you both and diffuse the whole thing. On this occasion, I thought joking about divorce would do exactly that... I just got the timing completely wrong. Instead, it made things worse, and that moment ended up immortalised in a three-and-a-half-minute pop song.”- The band added, “We love this record, we recorded it all live to tape at Tilehouse Studios with Shawn Lee producing. The second we got the mix back it felt like an instant Blossoms classic (if we do say so ourselves) go play it loud and tell your mates… And don't joke about divorce! Special shout to our good friend Rick Astley who swung by the studio to hang out and ended up putting some backing vocals on the outro!”
The band keyboard player Myles Kellock told Jack Saunders about the working with Rick Astley, “We were recording it in Denham, a place called Tilehouse Studios. And our friend, good friend, Rick Astley, lives 20 minutes away. So we're like fans coming down here, having to listen and get in there, and trying to singing. We just, it just kind of came together naturally. But I've been at the end then just thought we'd chuck that on there and keep it.” -
Tom Ogden added, “And it's kind of in terms of the song, the nature of it is, I'm saying to myself, you shouldn't have made that joke. And then the cherry on the top is Rick Astley, then entering fever, fever dream territory, saying, 'Don't joke about it. Don't joke about it.' on repeat.”
The band is currently working on their upcoming album.
Tom Ogden said, “We're making a record, and we're in the process of it now. We're going back down next week to Tilehouse Studios, 25 minutes from Rick's plate, somewhere near where Rick lives. We're gonna just keep going, and when it's ready, we're gonna show the world.” - source : BBC Radio 1
