MUNA Premieres New Song “Wannabeher” on BBC Radio 1

Los Angeles-based alt-pop band MUNA, consisting of Katie Gavin (vocals/guitar), Josette Maskin (lead guitar) and Naomi McPherson (guitar), premiered a new song “Wannabeher” on BBC Radio 1's New Music Show with Jack Saunders.
The song is the third single off of their upcoming fourth studio album “Dancing On The Wall”, which is set to be released on May 8, 2026 via Saddest Factory Records/Secretly Group.
It was written by Katie Gavin, Josette Maskin, Naomi McPherson, and Leland. Produced by Naomi McPherson.
The accompanying music video was directed by Dante Capone.
The band told Jack Saunders about the song, “This is about a really specific queer experience, but I bet it's something that a lot of people can relate to, where it's like, you like, there's a person that you really admire. And the lines kind of blur between, like wanting to embody certain characteristics of that person. And like wanting that kiss them, wanting that person's body itself. So we've had parts of this track for a really long time. Katie wrote these verses, I think in like 2017. A long time ago.”- They continued, “We were just in the studio with a friend of ours, Leland. And we were just working on some stuff. And this song came up as something that had a cool, kind of untapped for us, like energy to it. It had this potential to be a kind of cool, like Riot grrrl homage to a certain type of, like poppy punk from a certain time period.”
They added, “I think when we're making a record. It's kind of where we can actually kind of be our truest selves. And that is kind of like being a detective of music in a way. Like, we're always, I'd say at least maybe Naomi and I, but we're always trying to like, it's like a puzzle that you have to solve of like, what is the most right thing to like, put somewhere. Because you don't want to ever put too much, but you want the song to be itself, and you got to figure out, like, what that is.” -
The new album comprises 13 tracks, produced by Naomi McPherson. It is their first album in four years, following the 2022 self-titled album.
Lead singer Katie Gavin said of the album. “I feel most proud of is that I feel like, as a songwriter. I broke through to the other side of like, being able to collaborate with my bandmates in a new way. I think that something that has always been hard for me is like, I'm really sensitive to feedback. And I think there have been times like in our history, where that's actually held songs back. Something that is true of like the bands that I love the most is that, like, they had a safe space for to give each other honest feedback. Breaking through to the other side of like, being able to listen and trust them that they believe that I had something even better, like, inside of me, like, I think, led to making the songs that I'm proudest of.” - source : BBC Radio 1
