  • Sarah McLachlan Performs at NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

  • Canadian singer-songwriter Sarah McLachlan appeared on NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert to perform “Building a Mystery”, “Reminds Me”, “Only Human”, “Adia”, and “Angel”.

This marks her first appearance on NPR's Tiny Desk Concert.
She performed the songs with her longtime collaborators, the husband-wife duo Whitehorse, consisting of Luke Doucet on guitar and Melissa McClelland on bass.

Sarah McLachlan said, “We're super happy to be here. Thought we'd do a cross-section of old stuff and new stuff.”
She looked around at the tiny desk and all the stuff around her, she added, “I cannot look at this stuff when I'm playing. I'm so ADD and I look up and I'm just like, 'Oh, shiny things. So distracting.' So here's a mental focus here.”

“Building a Mystery”, “Adia” and “Angel” are featured on her fourth studio album “Surfacing”, released in 1997.
“Building a Mystery” was Canada's most successful single of 1997 and won Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the 40th Grammy Awards.
“Adia” reached No. 3 and “Angel” reached No. 4 on the US Billboard Hot 100, marking her second consecutive top-five hits on the chart.
  • Both of “Reminds Me” and “Only Human” are featured on her latest album “Better Broken”, released last September, her first release in nine years.
The studio version of “Reminds Me” featured Katie Gavin of American indie pop band MUNA.

Before the performance, she said of the song, “This is a new song called 'Reminds Me'. It's a little bit of a love song. During COVID, I watched a lot of TV. As I'm sure a lot of us did and I went down the Yellowstone rabbit hole and kind of fell in love with that country cowboy music stuff. So my sweetie's birthday was coming up and write him a love song and set a dangerous precedent for myself. But here it is. It's called Reminds Me.”

She said of the studio version, “I just wanted it to be simple and pure and beautiful, maybe a little bit sappy. And I love that we got Katie Gavin to sing on it in the studio.”
