Justin Maki Releases New Song “Old School Heart”

Canadian singer-songwriter Justin Maki released a new song “Old School Heart” on January 22, 2026.
The song is the follow-up to “Nine Lives”, which was released last November.
Both songs will appear on his upcoming sophomore album, which is expected to be released in 2026.
The track was written by David Adam Mohacsi, Justin Allan Edward Maki, Laura Anne Short, Martin Steven Patrick, Maïa Davies. Produced by David Mohacsi and Maïa Davies.
He wrote the song in Nashville during writing session. Originally, the song title was “My Damn Heart”. But he changed the title after recoding with producers David Mohacsi and Maïa Davies.
Justin Maki said of the song, “The song’s original iteration was ‘My Damn Heart’. David and Maïa loved the song but felt the title could be stronger, more evocative, more visual, and that the message could be delivered more gently without losing its weight. ‘Old School Heart’ is my way of speaking up. Of asking for the commitment that I seek, of expressing my values, and of asserting my value. The reason I long for commitment is because I’m an old soul. There's nothing cryptic about the message. The song just says it like it is.”- He continued, “I was on my first writing trip in Nashville when I accidentally encountered a new posse of friends at a networking bar called Red Barn. I started jamming out to a sample drum loop that made my head bop. I then came up with this John Mayer-esque riff and after some more time of refining the musical idea, I recorded the guitar. That became the foundation of our creation.”
He added, “And then I grew from there. We wrote about being in a relationship that you are frustrated with, being in a relationship that you don't feel prioritized in, and being at a point in that relationship where you feel the need to ask for a greater degree of commitment. All my songs are about relationships at this point. What can I say? Romance is inspiring. The magical combination of all of the song's elements made it qualify for the greater record.” - source : Apple Music
