The album comprises 14 tracks, including two songs from the debut EP “in all of my lonely nights”, and one song from the second EP “good old days”.
Produced by Dino Medanhodzic, Freedo, Lenno, Mark Schick, The Nocturns, Ollie Green, Ryan Linvill, Sarcastic Sounds, Sir Nolan and Stavros.
Also, as co-writers, British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran and American singer-songwriter Julia Michaels joined the album.
Henry Moodie said of the album, “Mood Swings is an album that captures the chaos, beauty, and heartbreak I've experienced over the past few years. Each track reflects a different side of me—a different mood, and a different moment in time. This album marks the beginning of my journey as an artist, and I wanted it to be as honest and personal as possible. Last winter was a strange one for me. Life finally felt like it slowed down after two years of almost constant touring, and I felt completely lost. I quickly realised I hadn't addressed a lot of things in my personal life. This album became a kind of flotation device—writing these songs helped me understand myself better. Whether it's coming to terms with how being bullied at school has shaped my life, or confronting the insecurities that still affect me every day, this record means everything to me.”
Henry Moodie told Sian Eleri of BBC Radio 1 about the album, “I feel like I remember I was sort of writing all these songs without really a direction, just about different parts of my life. And then sort of like at the start of the year, I realized that all these songs were very all over the place, about completely different things, different concepts. And I was really struggling. I was like, 'How am I going to make an album cohesive when everything's about completely different things?' And then I thought really deeply about it. I was like, mood swings. Makes so much sense, because my surname is moody the album, each song is a completely different mood that completely reflects, like, what I felt like my early 20s have felt like it's been chaotic all over the place. My late teens, my early 20s. So it kind of like perfectly came together. Once I figured that out, I then wrote the second half of the album, and that's when I had it in mind.”
Henry Moodie explained some tracks for the album.
“mood swings” “Tell me a bit about yourself. I wanted that voice to feel like it was my therapist, like we were sat down in the therapy session. And I sort of start off the album with word vomiting my life on someone, to get people to sort of know who I am before we get into the album. But it actually was my vocal producer, who did that, she's a legend.”
“right person, wrong time” via The Music “'Right person, wrong time' is about looking back at a previous relationship that ended – or situationship, actually, it wasn't even a relationship - and sort of feeling like maybe it could have ended up being way bigger than it should have been. It could have actually been the love of your life if it was at the right time... So, it's like, I guess, yearning about a previous relationship - being like, 'Maybe this could have been something, I don't know, and still not fully over your ex.”
“people pleaser” “There's a song called cigarette on there, which just was about a situation that, like actually happened ages ago. It was about a relationship when I was like 16, and I'm 21 now. But I'd never really written about it, because there was, it was such a heightened, emotional thing. And I worked with one of my favorite songwriters on this song, Julia Michaels, whom I have been a fan of my whole life. And I felt like if I was going to bring in this song, this concept, she would be the perfect person to help me get the song.”
“growing pains” “I love track 5 which is called 'growing pains' because it's a very personal one to me and im literally so excited for y'all to hear it.”
“sunday morning” “'sunday morning' is a song recalling the story of a night out where I fell in love with someone who told me they weren't looking for anything serious. It's the ultimate situationship song.”
“drunk text” “'drunk text' is all about loving someone from afar and that torturous feeling of being in love with someone who it just wouldn't work out with, it'll always have to be a secret. When I was writing the song, I really wanted to mirror my emotions; that excruciatingly confusing feeling of deleting the text that you are so close to sending, and then also, the feeling of what I'd wanted to say all along.”
“indigo” “'indigo' continues the 'drunk text' story. I wrote 'drunk text' when I was 18 and in the space of those two years since writing it, this person has fallen in love. I hope this song resonates with anyone who feels like they've lost their one that got away.”
“ten years time” “I'd written this song track 10 is called 'ten years time'. I'd written it with this songwriter called Steve Mack, who's an absolute legend. And we were getting so far to the song being finished, but we felt like we needed, like a new perspective on this song where we needed someone else to come in and help bring it from an eight out of 10 to a 10 out of 10. And Steve is friends with Ed Sheeran. And he wrote shape of you with Ed. He wrote a lot of songs with Ed. And I remember being in the session, and out of nowhere, suddenly, Ed Sheeran is sending us ideas for this song, and he really helped, like, take this chorus that we had and just like, turn it into the perfect chorus. We've never met in real life. I think he was in China or something on tour. He was like, the other side of the world, called in and helped us finish this song.”
“cigarette” “There's a song called cigarette on there, which just was about a situation that, like actually happened ages ago.
“pick up the phone” “Life can get dark sometimes and it's so easy to catastrophise and spiral, but things can and do get better. We need the bad days to grow and we need the bad days to learn. If we didn't, we wouldn't appreciate all the good ones! I've been there. I wrote the song to give hope to people who are in a bad place and really as a reminder how important it is to talk to people and reach out to someone if you need help!”
“dear drew” “There's a track called “dear drew” that's about my old school bully, very proud of that one.”
