  • World Surf League: Oi Rio Women's Pro Kicks Off in Saquarema, Rio de Janeiro

  • The 4th stop on WSL Championship Oi Rio Women's Pro kicked off in Saquarema, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on May 11, 2018.


    Previously event Margaret River Pro was canceled with due to shark activity, but Founders' Cup of Surfing was successfully at the Surf Ranch in Lemoore, California, where wave pool is more than 100 miles from the nearest beach, last week.
    Oi Rio Pro is first event in almost one month in natural element.
    Unfortunately, Courtney Conlogue has withdrawn from the Oi Rio Women's Pro due to an injury she received on the Gold Coast prior to the start of the season. She will be replaced by French surfer Pauline Ado.
    The top-ranked competitors dominated in Round 1, including 2-time World Champ Tyler Wright (AUS), 6-time World Champ Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 3-time World Champ Carissa Moore (HAW), Lakey Peterson (USA) and Tatiana Weston-Webb (HAW). Also currently 10th place Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS) advanced to Round 3.

    Sally Fitzgibbons said;
    "It was awesome to start the morning in heat one. It is a little slow but it definitely has got some scoring potential. Although it is low scores, it is still super exciting because you do not know what is going to happen next."
    Tatiana Weston-Webb said;
    "I got really lucky with Keely's and Johanne's positioning. I think they messed up a few times and sat too far in for the wave I got wide, which was my best wave of the heat."
