  • MotoGP Le Mans: Maverick Vinales Wins, Valentino Rossi Crashes Out On The Last Lap in French GP

  • The Round 5 on MotoGP 2017, Le Mans Grand Prix ran at Le Mans in France on May 21.

Pole position start Maverick Vinales (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) claimed his third victory of the 2017 MotoGP season after Valentino Rossi (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) crashed out on the last lap.
Local hero Johann Zarco (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) finished 2nd place, which was his maiden podium. Dani Pedrosa (Dani Pedrosa) was third and stood on the podium following Spanish GP.
Beginning, Johann Zarco led the race, Maverick Vinales and Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) followed him. Afterwards, Valentino Rossi passed Marc Marquez, moved up to third. Maverick Vinales overtook Johann Zarco on 6 laps, moved up to top.
Marc Marquez crushed out at Turn 2 on 11 laps to go. Instead of him, Dani Pedrosa moved up to fourth. Valentino Rossi passed Johann Zarco on 5 laps to go, overtaking Maverick Vinales on the remaining 3 laps. But on the last lap, Valentino Rossi crushed out and his victory slipped away.
This result marks Maverick Vinales leads the Championship standings, Valentino Rossi drops down to third, 23 points behind Vinales and six behind Pedrosa.

    Maverick Vinales (P1):
“On the first lap Johann was quite incredible, I was thinking ‘ok…now his rear tyre is going to drop’, but it didn’t! He was difficult to overtake, finally I got the chance and I tried to pull a gap but it was Zarco 0.3, Zarco 0.3…I couldn’t believe it. Then I saw it was Valentino and he wanted to catch me – he did, and he overtook me. Sector 1 and 2 I was right behind him, he made a small mistake and I got past. I knew I was strong in Sector 3…it’s been a long time for the race coming down to the last lap. I was closing all the open points, I didn’t know he crashed – I risked a lot before I was pushing so much. On the last lap I was waiting for the touch – I know Valentino! But I’m pleased to be leading again and recover after two bad races. Mugello will be very difficult because Valentino will be really strong there, but it’s good for my riding style and good for the Yamaha…although I don’t want to say too much about that because we thought that in Jerez!”

    Johann Zarco (P2):
“First of all, good job to Maverick taking win 500, it’s so good for Yamaha. And for me, leading the race was nice. From the first race of the season I felt good in the first corners so starting from the front row here I took the opportunity. When I was leading I had a quick flash from Qatar and I said ‘hey, don’t make a mistake!’ but the conditons were better than there. When Maverick overtook me it was great because I saw he was so fast - but I was able to stay with him. I think that was a key for the podium – I was able to go away with him. I was happy with third but then when Valentino was fighting with Maverick I thought ‘here is a tight circuit, something could happen’ – and something did.”

    Dani Pedrosa (P3):
“It was truly a very hard situation before the start, I was thinking all night how to make it through the first chicane because it’s so tight and when you’re back in the pack it’s so hard to not touch someone or make a mistake then. Then the race stretches out so much it’s so hard to make up ground later, even if you’re fast. I knew I had pace from yesterday so that kept me confident but at the same time I knew I had to get through. I was really focused and made some good clean chicanes, the start was good then I overtook more riders. At the end of the first lap I wasn’t as far off the front group as I expected so then I just focused on the pace. It was tough behind Dovizioso because he was riding well and he was so fast out of corners and good in braking. And the pass with Cal was on the limit, he made a little mistake and I went through but then he closed the door recovering his line and we hit together…fortunately nobody crashed, it wasn’t my intention to touch him. Then I gained on Marc, then on the last laps I struggled more with some chatter there in fourth and couldn’t really gain ground. It was a nice gift at the end. It’s an amazing feeling to be on the podium today after starting 13th - it was a big relief just to get through the first chicane!”
