Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Johnnie Mikel has released a new song “Friday Night” with a accompanying music video, directed by Andy Tedder. The song was premiered exclusively on Directlyrics.
The track follows up his debut EP "Night of Your Lif", which was released on February 2, 2018
The new song is electro-pop music with a slicker dance-meets-pop-meets-R&B sound.
Johnnie Mikel told Directlyrics about the song;
“When writing Friday Night, I wanted to do a huge pop track with a subtle 90’s R&B feel. I really look up to artists like Justin Timberlake and Bruno Mars, so I wanted to bring my artistry into that style for the song”. “Friday Night” is giving me cousin of Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop The Feeling!” vibes and that’s one lucky family to be part of. As for the message of the song, Johnnie told us: “Lyrically, it’s about having the best night ever with people you love. It’s the perfect party track!”. Its title pretty much gave it away but indeed “Friday Night” is a feel-good jam about having the time of your life, and falling love – which is an element perfectly relatable to “having the time of your life”.-
- He explained of the music video;
"The video was surreal; like a dream come true. We actually shot it in Nashville and it was really, really cool. I met with the director, who I’ve known for a while, and we just kind of vibed on a bunch of ideas. I really wanted something that was super fashion-forward, kind of edgy, and had this universal vibe to it. So, we created this really interesting club scene. I was involved with the overall concept of it; the whole dream sequence and the Polaroid pictures, all of that was a lot of fun.
